Author Topic: 30 Z layer deep (at least) adamantine vein, no semi molten rock or spoilers.  (Read 3903 times)

Apparently I'm really lucky (or unlucky if I want to meet the spoilers) because I have, though digging down, found my current adamantine vein is absurdly long and, since I wasn't paying attention, safe up to at least 30 Z layers (my miner dug his way into the middle of it).

So... yeah, I guess I'm lucky, but I didn't think they could *be* this big. I'm far beyond where my cavern ends, or at least where the explored part ends.

The one I just breached was 35 deep, so I guess you shouldn't get too greedy now!

You may want to build a containment system.

Wall off the miner and have him dig. Occasionally tear down the wall to get the adamantine out, then seal him up again and get him digging if you dare.

Worst that happens if you lose the miner as well as all adamantine since you last hauled it out.

Yeah but with the FPS issues that breaching hell brings, it's really better to not breach hell until you're ready to combat it, rather than sealing it off.

It is really, really easy to flood this place with magma fwiw.

Doors stop fire, right?

You can get some massive adamantine spikes. I've seen one that was 90 safe z-levels, though that was with some worldgen mucking.

Five of them on the same map, too.

I built adamantine houses for my dorfs after a while, I just had too much of it.

Man I'm lucky if I get 3 or 4 levels of adamantine.  I've even generated worlds with no demons so I could mine the entire vein, and not gotten more than about 6 levels even when you can go all the way down.

I've had that once too. It was  just about 40z down, and I dug all the way down to the magma sea and nothing happened. I didnt breach anything, dug from lvl 80 something to lvl 20 before I just stopped.

I had a vein that stuck into the first cavern, in a world with with three caverns. Was pretty cool; I went to where it was in the third cavern and fortification'd the edges until I was certain it wasn't hollow, then dug out the entire thing.

Eh, it's been reported that if you mess with worldgen too extremely, adamantium veins can glitch to the surface. Mind you, I haven't confirmed this, but Magmawiki says it can happen.

I have yet to find HFS or adamantine because I'm still trying to effectively utilize the new military system.

Off topic question but is there a worldgen setting that adds more z levels underground?

I've had long veins of it too, but it's very rare.  95% of the time they only seem to rise to the top of the magma sea or 1 level above it.  Occasionally they'll extend all the way to the floor of the lowest cavern, even more rarely they will be higher than that and you can discover adamantine just by exploring the caverns.  I'm not sure there's any way to encourage them, it seems to be random.

There are plenty.  You can set cavern layers to 3 and you can also increase the z-levels between each cavern layer (and the surface, and above the magma) if you want more actual rock.  Cavern passage density seems to affect height as well, if it's limited to very low values you get large flat caverns, more passages seems to make them higher.

I seem to be the only one who thinks 150 levels are plenty XD
Will most maps have at least some adamantium?

Adamantine is randomly generated to appear once in a 2x2 area, like such:

oo
o@

However, since you may embark in between 2x2 sections, like this: (* = embark area)

ooo@
@**o
@**o
oo@o

...you won't be guaranteed to have adamantine unless you embark in at least 3x3 area. It's very likely to get adamantine in a 2x2, or even a 3x2, but there's no guarantee.

So far, I'm digging down to carve out my magma pumpstack, and I'm 60Zs down and have only breached the first layer of caverns.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.
