PC's vs consoles
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:43:33 pm »

Its been a while since I've seen an argument like this, but some of my friends (annoyingly) are adament that PC's suck compared to this gen consoles. So its been my mission to convince them otherwise.

So where do you lot stand on it?
Are PC's the way forward? With their clunklyness, high power and general value for money.
Or are consoles? With their ease of access, relative cheapness and lack of any real gaming power.

Both are valid for different reasons.

PC can't be beat for modifications and really deep games. Plus abandonware, freeware, emulation, etc.

Consoles are great if you have a few friends round, want things to just work out the box, or (like most people) have a much bigger TV than monitor.

Consoles are such a closed ecosystem it's hard to respect them too much when there's so much freedom of choice on PC

They're both good.  If I want to play serious games for serious people, I play on a computer.  If I want to have fun with my non-gaming friends, I play with them on a console.

It's rather unfair putting handhelds here. Personally, I think unofficial handhelds like Pandora, Dingoo, and their kin have the potential for the best gaming experiences anywhere. Normal (i.e. Sony and Nintendo) handhelds also have great gameplay value, one you can have anywhere and at any time as long as the batteries last.

But in PCs versus Consoles, there are different views. On one hand, consoles are BUILT for gaming and are much less prone to have errors in their games. Yet the overwhelming majority of the modding scene is over on the PCs, and the most advanced niche games also exist only here. I can't say which is undeniably better. One has the ease of use and control, the other has great customizability and a gigantic array of things you can do to the games other than play them, not to mention how much easier it is to do text chat with a full-size keyboard. They have different positive and negative sides, and both are good for gaming, but as long as the handhelds are in the poll, I'm voting for them.

Not another one of these threads... I hope it doesn't devolve into a flamewar.

In any case. PC here. Consoles cost too much and don't have Dwarf Fortress.

Both are valid for different reasons.

PC can't be beat for modifications and really deep games. Plus abandonware, freeware, emulation, etc.

Consoles are great if you have a few friends round, want things to just work out the box, or (like most people) have a much bigger TV than monitor.

Get a video card that supports it, and use an adapter to plug your TV in. Instant giant low-res monitor.

I think the main thing a PC has going is the keyboard / mouse configuration, which is the best way I've found to control an FPS. That includes a light gun, which may feel nice but it limits you to virtually no controls compared to keyboard / mouse.

On the other hand, certain games work very well with a handheld controller. Fighting games and racing games. Simple flight and space sims work best with a joystick, etc. BUT a computer can handle all of those peripherals.

Next, you have vast libraries of freeware for computers. In fact, you can buy a computer, modem, and internet connection and get more free content than you can ever finish playing for free.

Plus, you can play everything made two consoles back on your PC.

If you want to play modern games on your PC you may have to shell out extra money.

So consoles are really only better for parties.

a pc has far more to chose from, more power, better hard were and a range of prices.

Consoles are good if you like AAA games and have easy hardware as you can run all the games out the box.

but with some games the console or pc has clear home I.E. morrowind must be played on pc just for its mods.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Oh and player-modifications. You almost never see those on console, but when you do the mods screw with you (Whatever that sackboy game was called).

Now handheld game systems are better at gaming than palm computers, I'll give you that.

Oh I see.

Why wouldn't you just stop playing big-industry games?

There are so many other choices than to buy EA. I don't buy EA now. And I'm look at my shiny, healthy coat!

Do you like the games Bioshock, orange box, any games not made by EA? Do you think you would get the same quality for the same price if they managed them?
