Point arguing for cheapness of console - I almost always buy my consoles used, and I generally only purchase 3 or 4 games for any given console. Which can often then be traded in for a 5th game if I don't have any friends willing to swap games (I usually do).

Even at 60 dollars a pop for games, that still means I'm paying less than 500 dollars for console entertainment.

As to the PC controllers - just because they look like a decent controller don't mean they are, and finding one that IS halfway decent is incredibly goddamn difficult (I know, I've tried). I mean, I haven't looked for like a year and a half, so maybe something impressive has happened since then, but the one's I've used were all terrible (and it was difficult to get some games to work with them properly).
Step 1: Go to a Logitech-carrying store
Step 2: Buy a Rumblepad 2 for $30
Step 3: There is no Step 3

wired X-box 360 controllers work with PCs (or wireless with unnecessarily expensive attachments) and are a good quality. In fact... I think ps3 (don't know about wireless) and wii controllers work too. I play just cause 2 on my laptop with a 360 controller -- feels better that way. Too bad that they don't make enough games that actually feel good with a keyboard and mouse.

There are no official windows drivers for the PS3 dualshocks and sony for some reason blocked it from being fully recognized as a proper gamepad if you plug it in, but some japanese guy cooked his own drivers that work OK if you fiddle around with them a little.

Honestly, I've gotten so used to driving with mouse/keyboard that console games feel weird. Once you get used to them, using WASD to move and mouse to aim/steer is very natural. Especially after being trained by Valve to always check the roof (gamers don't look up... unless they've played HL2 or L4D), the accuracy and speed from the mouse are pure gold.

I think the main draw for PC's, at least to me, is that they're more backwards compatible, and for that matter, more inter-compatible. Macs and Linux PC's can emulate Windows games (the opposite is probably true as well, but Linux is so easy to dual boot with how lightweight it is that emulation is unnecessary. Not sure about macs, but then, I've never seen mac-only programs that I cared about), and many 95/98/XP games are now either free or abandonware, or else have gone into the Steam $5 bargain bin. You see more indie games for PC's as well, many of which are very innovative. Honestly, I think consoles are going to have to rethink the controls they put on game releases. They were useful when the industry was recovering (part of what triggered the first video game crash was 3rd party developers releasing horrible games), but now that the industry is robust they need to lighten up.
