I didn't include ores, as this is a favorite STONE list. DF considers stone and ore different, and therefore so do I

I really like Realgar, as it's red and works really well with shades--white stone or dark stone are impressive complements. If you're a fan of Hematite, you'll be a fan of realgar. Microcline is nice, too.

Personally, I prefer Petrified Wood. Petrified Wood was once a living tree, changed over time into unliving stone. It violates on so many levels that which the Elves hold in such high regard and allows Dwarfs to make all the "gaudy bobbles" they want out of that which once was a "beautiful tree".

I just love Kaolinite's navy blue color.  It goes well with everything!

I would probably like Cobaltite best if it actually gave us Cobalt...

Hi!

I picked microcline because of its beautiful cyan color (only in the game, though, real life microcline seems to be ugly). However, it was a close race between it and kaolinite and cobaltite which are the other main sources for bright colors for me.

And the games does not discern between ore and regular stone. They can both be used for masonry, crafting, mechanics... Ores and non-layer stones are even in the same file in the raws. The only difference between them is that ores can also be used for making metal bars.

In general?  Granite, y'know where yer are wi' Granite, a real Dwarf's stone that, sturdy. Looks like it made of mashed together gems. None o'that poncy marh-ble, marble's for Elves.
