Personally, in terms of layer stones, I like Limestone, Marble, and Granite.  They're all nice building or crafting stones, and together they contain almost all the ores in the game.  Off to one side a bit are Obsidian and Gabbro, which hold the remaining ores, but they're a little more difficult to get in combination with Limestone/Marble/Granite.

its a real world ore of aluminum, but the dwarves aren't nearly advanced enough to extract it. rutile is a real world ore of titanium

That sounds like a challenge now good sir. Can the dwarves develop a mechanism for producing titanium from rutile for example?

They should have the neccessary heat under control, they are dwarves after all. It gets more complicated after that. I'm only vaguely familiar with the hunter process but i'm pretty sure it would require a method to gather sodium and chlorine for the production process and an entirely different form of facility.

That said...it's titanium. Close to the strength of steel for substantially less weight? I'm sure we could think up a number of uses for that and it would probably freak out the humans just a little that we had a material they had yet to discover.

For those who say the challenge is to great, just remember that it was the dwarves that invented the atom-smasher, the magma pump stack and the strange mood. Reality aint going to hold them back.

Not just modding it in! Creating a series of workshops, tasks, skills, and other things that would make it more complicated than making a dwarven supercomputer would be more like the thing we want to achieve. Something that takes a hellton of time just so you can keep that chalk handy.

Kind of like the effort required to get some Adamantine?

Granite.  I like the look of the rough stone, and of course it's a great layer for a lot of materials.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

i dont know what crazy things you dwarfs have been mining, but if its isnt rutile, it isnt worth knowing, just cant get enough of that longitudinal striation and heart shaped and reniform twins. also, its actually red.
oh and epitaxial growth of rutile on hematite is next to none with regards to awesomeness.

Semi-Molten Rock.
Where it is, molten rock is near.

Actually, can I just go with molten anything?
