But noone is taking it as far as EA is...

EA can do it because they are a HUGE company.

For a smaller company this would be suicide because they make up soo little of the market

For EA they can (Heck they ARE the sports game market). They are large enough to take the risk and they are large enough to gain the most from it.

The fact of the matter is that the legal state of videogames is frankly all over the place and it needs some serious reorganization.

Hi!

Just to clarify this, I am no real fan of EA myself. There is the thing with Infocom and also SimCity Societies and definitely Infocom.

However, I have to point out that in this particular case, EA are actually not the worst around there (I guess they are trying, but they are not quite there yet). At least as far as I understand it, you can play in single player mode with a game you purchased as a used version, right? Or even if that is limited, you can still play the game when you are not connected to the internet, right (provided that it makes sense for the game in question).

Well, there is the abomination called "Buddy" in Japan, which would make the worst jerks proud. Games protected by "Buddy" require you to be connected to their server all the time in order to run. Should your internet connection fail or their server takes a break - bad luck, your game will just shut down in mid-play! At least that is what the official information on that system says. Fortunately (?), that sick perversion also has a racist agenda, so it will only run on Japanese computers, which kept me from even facing any decision about that.

And mind you, "Buddy" is used to protect normal single player games like the old "Ys" series, not multi-player games. We are talking about games that do not even have any online/internet features (besides being bought via online stores).

EDIT: But yeah, after the thing with Infocom, EA has a special flavor for me.

Except this isn't exactly the "lesser of two evils" sorta deal where we have to chose one over the other.

Ok so sure EA isn't eating babies, but I do not approve of their all kitten diets.

Hi!

Yes, of course you are right. I merely didn't want to give them an award they don't deserve. People said that EA were taking things farther than anyone else, and I simply couldn't ignore that. So, sorry, designers at EA, but you are only second place in this one :) :) :) :)

Hi!

As a publisher, boycotting EA Games is sort of counterproductive, because it also harms the developers who were guilty only of choosing the publishing company that would offer them the most success.

Grakelin

Not exactly it isn't about harming buisness it is about making them recognise that there is power behind the consumer.

If it could be done without touching buisness. It would be done.

This is known as the concept of: Dollar Votes

Also you know you take the risk when you go with that Company. If you invest in lets say a gold company that is building a new mine. You should be prepared if they find no gold inside. HUGE companies getting hit with bad buisness isn't anything new.

Hi

Dollar Votes against EA Games products is dollar votes against the developers of good games.

Hi

Dollar Votes against EA Games products is dollar votes against the developers of good games.

If the developers were good they will find buisness again.

If EA continues the practices become standard.

So really. I know who gets the Axe. (and going by Peter's newest work... I can't say I am too sad Bullfrog disbanded now)

We should also probably talk about the people EA is going to fire becuase they are losing money too.

Nobody wants to sign on a developer whose game bombed.

Wow, then you really shouldn't have backed up a company that was stressing the community at large.

Harsh but really. We could even speak about the many people who would lose their jobs if EA lost money.

In fact I bet some of those EA employees had a family to raise.

Honestly the Capitalist system written it clear: If you don't want something don't buy it.

The game itself may be good, but the programming is BAD! What could you do to fix that?

Are your games SOOO good that we WON'T want to boycott?

It wasn't :P

It is just that the consumer can be stupid or mislead. In Spore's case I knew exactly what I was getting because I made sure I was informed and it was as much as a "ehhh" game as I was expecting. Other people either deluded themselves, were mislead by others, or had impartial information. Though to admit you had to do a LOT of looking to get the complete information.

Some laws have been passed for buisnesses not because they didn't work, but because people were fed up with it.

HA! I was so hyped up for spore I spent most of my free time looking for any new updates on it. The closest thing that can to proof that spore was dumbed down was a website named DICE which I have never heard of before and wasn't about to trust.

I would love to see where you found evidence that spore was downplayed as badly as it was.

Uh it's pretty common knowledge that SPORE didn't deliver on a lot of the things it promised.

Exactly, watch the 2005 e3 demo, I would pay 50$ for that demo right there.
Not this crappy string of minigames.
And so you know, they kept a lot of info about spore under wraps until release, everyone expected the 2005 version and we get this sack of crap.
