Uh, I watch America Next Top Model and I watch her Talk Show. So I advert the trope.

Most people can study up, and become a banker or investor. Other people can hit the gym and get stronger. Aside from plastic surgery there's not much you can do about your physical attractiveness.

There are many many professions in the world that people don't take seriously. Sewer workers, bin men, janitors, etc. The difference being that they actually have jobs entailing more than just looking pretty.

Also: everyone objectifies models because their job is to be sex objects.
I think this is unfair. Some models, sure but majority of models job is to display and advertise what they are wearing. Sex appeal is a part of it, but not the sole goal.

After watching American Next Top Model, you can get a good sense of what makes a good model.

I've not watched America's Next Top Model because I don't think I can stomach spooning my own brain out through my eyesocket, which would inevitably result from me being subjected to it for more than a few minutes, but of course models are sex objects.

Why do you never see ugly models? Sure their job is to advertise what they're wearing (or are eating/drinking/using/being draped over), but they do that by being beautiful while wearing it. The entire modeling industry is based on the fact that if you put your product next to beautiful people, other people will desire it.

Yeah, their job description probobly isn't "be sexy" (though it wouldn't surprise me). But they do their job by being sexy. That's the sum total of what they do.

I think it would be pretty awesome for a model to have a resume that lists her skills as

Been Sexy - 4 years
Been Sultry - 1 year

etc.

With contact information for references.

You call the dude up and tell him the model's name. He's like, "hell yeah, that was the sultry one, right?"

Because we're ignoring all the important advances in science and cultural development that models produce. Why, just last week they fired up the LHC for a test run. Particles accelerated quite handily, smashed into each other, and provided excellent data. But what really made the event important was a skinny chick making love to the camera nearby.

This just in, gang violence in Mexico halted by the efforts of a girl who looked really good and her incredible handbag.

Breaking news: devastation of the Mediterranean's aquaculture reversed because a guy with fine abs stood on the shore wearing $1200 sunglasses ... ironically.

But they have a purpose! A scientist isn't going to climb up a tree to save a cat, and a police officer isn't about to pass a national healthcare bill.

They just do what their job tells them to, just like ANY OTHER PROFESSIONAL. The only difference is that everyone assumes they are shallow bimbo whores.

I think other people in the thread were assuming her book would be bad because she's not an author. And because the book does sound a little trite from the back-cover-synopsis.

I wouldn't expect a police officer to know the first thing about creating a national healthcare bill. I sure don't.

But we should be careful not to just assume she can't do it well. Down that road lies elitism, and ignoring the efforts of the amateur. And isn't everyone an amateur at some point? And does the occasional amateur not produce something wonderful?

No, the only difference is that they spend their lives having big breasts and starving themselves.  And they're paid for it.  And it's disgusting.

Also, I would sure as hell climb a tree to save a cat.  Mathematician or no.  But you couldn't pay me to starve myself by feeding myself cotton balls and then use every asset I have--my body, my mind, my spirit--on nothing but walking down an aisle and acting catty.  You do know that they're not allowed to build significant muscle either, right?  What they're being paid for is the life of a walking skeleton, with a bit of fat put in socially-ordained "correct" places.  Speaking from personal experience, it is really hard not to be shallow when you're in the critically underweight zone.

Dunno.  I have a peculiar hatred for the entire industry.  Might I ask why you are so set on defending it?

Okaaay, so all models are well endowed and anorexic and they are paid for those two qualities?

I didn't bother reading the rest of that post, the beginning was just so ignorant and hateful.

Yes. Yes, I would say that their job is based exclusively on sex appeal.

There is a skill to strutting, and setting up the right expression, etc. And the self-control necessary to stay so dreadfully skinny is something pretty amazing.

That said, I have seen the Tyra show (my girlfriend watches daytime TV on Hulu sometimes). And I can say she is no less competent than other talk show hosts. Which is to say, an ugly horrible ignorant person like "Dr" Phil, or just someone of middling quality like many of them. So it's not like being pretty makes you dumb.

If that were the case we wouldn't have seen Paris Hilton's well-regarded and well-referenced outcry against desertification around the Gobi at Ted 2010.

(I am joking, that didn't actually happen. I think she was hanging around on a beach somewhere with a purse dog wearing an alligator sarong at the time)

EDIT: I am leaving the ambiguity over whether it was she or her purse-dog who wore the sarong

Yes. Yes, I would say that their job is based exclusively on sex appeal.

Well, for one, saying that all models have a debilitating mental disorder (anorexia) is a pretty inflamatory remark, but I assume that's your point. Then, nearly all models are on the smaller end of the breast spectrum, and are usually chosen for that so as to show the clothing better.
Clothing? Oh right, the job of a model is based exlusively on selling clothing. They are doing their best to make the clothing look good, not trying be sexy. I know the difference is subtle, but it is there, not that you probably care to acknowledge it.

It would appear she has gone from TYRA-MAIL to TYRAVEL (Tyra-(pseudo-)novel(la)).

No, the only difference is that they spend their lives having big breasts and starving themselves.  And they're paid for it.  And it's disgusting.
Bweh? Vector, have you seen even a commercial for Next Top Model? All the girls on that show that I've seen have had next-to-no breasts at all, not big breasts. But that might just be Tyra's selection of girls; I don't see many other models in my day-to-day life.

I don't know, man, from the back of a book I can usually tell if it's going to be terribad or not, and the way she's described it (and her talk show, just watched a clip or two, dear god that is awful) makes it sound absolutely crappy.
