also remember that participation is a factor. the more people finding bugs, the faster toady can fix em all.
This is not entirely true.
No matter how quickly he is flooded by bug reports, he still needs to take time to fix them. Currently he is working on the merge stuff. Finding more bugs now will in no way speed up the fix rate. It only adds them to the queue. Just so long as the bug queue is filled as quickly as he can institute fixes, we are good to go. A longer queue does not mean faster fixes.

Hi!

Personally, I think if you are only interested in the military or if you see no alternative to smooth channels, you are probably better off in 40D. Also, if you are unwilling to face one or two odd bugs. Otherwise, I think 31 is easier and more fun in many ways.

However, I want to chime in with the bug report thing. While it is true that bugs are only fixed when Toady One works on them, it is also true that you need to know exactly what the bug is to begin with. Sure, some things are dead obvious, so to speak, but others, especially crashes, are much more difficult to attribute. Experiences from different players and save files can help tremendously with identifying the causes. And occasionally, what seems to be unrelated bugs may turn out under closer inspection to be related.

The only things so far that bug me, are the byzantine military and the lack of friggin visualizer support.

Yah the lack of a working 3D visualizer is kind of vexing me at the moment.  I have an awesome fort built up and direly want to see what it looks like.  Unfortunately it's at the point of slow-down to where it's unplayable (10 fps).  In the mean time, I'm occupying myself with a new fort.

As updates are coming in to the dwarf fortress wiki I'm really starting to see the extent of the updates. I think I will do what some have mentioned here and give it a go in a another folder and see how it works out :) The idea of having so very many Z levels is awesome but I could see how it could lead to massive lag. I'd like it if I could stick with just about 40 dwarves or so and never get any more from migration and just build slowly from natural births/deaths.

Isn't that what Popcap in the ini is for? I mean, some will sneak through (I remember people not wanting ANY immigrants and getting the first wave anyway) but about 40 should be stable enough, as the first wave hopefully won't give you more than 37 dwarves (in my fort my first wave was 8, followed by 2, then another 8).

So Ledi's been training the cats into an army of disposable warbeasts?  Why did no-one think of this sooner?!
Hellcannon seemed to be constantly on the verge of death and Levergedon before my turn helped, but ultimately what killed it was Ledi's cat army.

I'm waiting for most of the remaining bugs to be smoothed out. Military, hospitals, etc.

Well at least there's a stonesense, and DF was never a "do not play without visualizer" game.

I just cannot go back to the 40d with the all new features. But I spend most of the time modding, you could guess it.
I always promise myself "just one more Genesis version and you will play it!" And then I begin to develop a further update... Heh.

After getting used to the new channeling, it would be a hassle to go back to the old way. I also appreciate that you need mud to farm, though Toady has hinted at fixing it back to the old way, which I'll just mod out then.

The pop cap feature never worked the last time I tried it, it didn't do a damn thing to stop them from coming in but that may have changed or I might have just done it wrong. I must try again with my next fort ;) The channeling thing is odd and I plan on writing about it in my next blog post. I think the wiki has it wrong that you must remove the ramps to make it impassable. In my current game the ramps are still there but the dwarves, even those with swim abilities, will not cross it. Animals will not cross it, and so on. Some have noted that magma will over flow from a ramp, but magma will over flow from a channel just as well if there is enough of it and the situation is right. I've never seen water (which is notorious for flowing up and destroying fortresses)flow up out of the channel when the ramp still on it even when it is being fed by a brook directly.

So far I am liking what I see with the new version, sadly my newly created world is covered in 80% aquifers. It makes it very hard to find a place to start a new fortress but it is just so beautiful I can't stand to create another one. (Check my blog post about world generation it has a photo of the world in detail and you'll see what I mean) I guess I should just man up and learn how to breach an aquifer. I've seen guides on how to do it but they all seem very hard to me and they may not even work in the new version. Anyone here had any success pumping out enough water yet?

DF2010 new world and system features/fun adds lot more interest for the fortress caretaker than 40d, but before moving to DF2010 one must know :

-the nice new features of 40d19 are not yet implemented in DF2010

-the military is unfortunately broken by many bugs, more than often you'll end with weapon-less and armor-less dwarves despite you have everything and the arsenal dwarf required, leading into your dwarves trying to wrestle goblin and dying by dozen from just a goblin pikeman or two (wrestling is extremely weak in DF2010).

-lose your expedition leader before reaching 50 pop (so before having the mayor system to start), and you'll lose every unassigned noble position (except militia leaders that can be re-assigned ) or will loe the assigned ones as soon as they die/you try to re-assign, it breaks a lot of the game system.

So to avoid frustrations, be sure to keep your 40d19 while playtesting DF2010, so you can always get back to a working DF when you need it.
But when those bugs will be fixed and DF2010 more stable, you'll be happy to enjoy DF2010 as a better game than 40d.

I'm waiting for the merge.  I'm not afraid of bugs, but I can't handle the lack of zooming, free resizing, and my preferred tileset.

Yeah it was kind of a shocker.

It doesn't really matter what you do right now.

There's lots of fun stuff like expansive caverns to explore and nasty critters,

but there's invincible beasts that parade around your fort, and a lot of old features are really hard to find.

I think it really depends what kind of fort you wanna make. The new version has serious modding potential though.

You are probably aware of this, but just in case, I want to point out that island worlds have been reported to be extremely aquifer-laden (which is actually not surprising). I have not genned islands myself as I prefer easy trading with large civs, and I have found normal regions to have a standard variance of wetness depending on my settings.

Yes I am aware of it , but only because I have first hand experience with it :) I wonder now that we have caverns if there are any new ways to get through an aquifer, maybe getting it drain into a cavern? Still that would just create a massive underwater cave system , might serve as a good source of fishing ;P
