To Dwarf Fortress 2010 or not to Dwarf Fotress 2010?
« on: April 28, 2010, 01:56:52 am »

Hey guys I've been away for a while, busy with school, work, kids ect. I've been looking at the Dwarf Fortress 2010 releases but I have not made the jump yet. I guess you could say I'm slow to adopt change :) I've been playing a new Fortress in the last version released before the first new release. My question is this, are there enough new and improved things in the new version to warrant a jump to it? Or should I wait until more of the bugs are worked out before I move to the new versions? I'd just like some general opinions and what not about the differences and if it is time for me to download the new version and let my old fortress die :)

I do like the mentions of the much deeper Z levels ect, I have not had time to read the full change list yet but so far I like what I see. Please give me some advice, would be most appreciated. Thanks !

Ultimately, its your decision of course, but if it were me, I would get it, but not necessarily jump for it. Download it, check out the new features, and jump back down to 40d19. 2010 is very glitchy, and 40d has some features I wouldn't leave and forget, like zooming.

If you're having fun with the fortress you're playing now, you may as well finish it off first.

I created a forum account just to throw in my two cents.
2010 is a great time, without getting into spoilery stuff, but the underground features alone are worth the look.  The above posters are right though.  You shouldn't feel obligated to swap, but I definitely think its worth a look.

Currently I'm playing 2010 without military. I can't seem to keep it from crashing randomly if I create squads. Might be a bug in DF wine-compatibility that'll get fixed with the OpenGL merge, or then it might have to wait until the .04 or later before we get the military bugs fixed.

If it wasn't for the new minerals, I'd have gone back to the old version.

However, on an added note, you do, of course, have to see how the framerates differ... unfortunately one of the pillars of DF is still its massive CPU usage, so this might be more or less a factor in whether you swap. For example, on 40d, I get ~60 FPS on embark (Horrible, I know), on 2010, I get max (100) fps until ~25 dwarves. If your fps is too low, your effectively playing in slow-motion...

I am still on 40d.  The release of 2010 was what spurred me to finally learn to play, but since I'm new, I don't like not knowing whether something isn't working because I'm doing it wrong or because it is a bug.

(On the theme of things not working, how do I turn empty space into a floor and an up-stair using constructions?  Once I construct the floor it won't let me construct the stair.)

Somewhat unintuitively, an up-stair implicitly includes a floor.  So just get rid of the floor and build a lone up-stair.  Then of course build a down-stair or an up/down-stair above the up-stair.

Seasonal autosave is the key here. Whilst military crashes are rare, it's more a case of learning what causes the crashes and how to circumvent all the weird behaviour and obvious bugs. As if DF's learning curve wasn't bad enough.. :)

As much as I like the stability of the 40d version and the niceness of the various graphics features in d19 there is no way I'd go back from 0.31, there is just far too much Fun stuff.

Although actually I did like the dig right from the old 2D version more than the dig deep in the current one.

Actually the bugs make it all the more FUN. In my latest fortress built on semi-artificial cliffs my stoneworker/mason had a little accident (that included cave-in and 14 z-levels of free fall landing in giant pool infested with cave crocodiles) which he didn't survive (pussy). He also happened to be my Expedition leader. I guess I'm in for a fun time :D

also remember that participation is a factor. the more people finding bugs, the faster toady can fix em all.

The only things so far that bug me, are the byzantine military and the lack of friggin visualizer support.
