In the deepest part of the library, the librarian carrying Dragnar's book reaches a barred door, the only lock in the library. Opening it with a small scrap of godly power from Dragnar it reveals a single bookshelf, mostly bare. The shelf contains one book for each god, recording everything Dragnar knows about them. The librarian places the book on the shelf and leaves, locking the door behind it.

Form. Shape. Shell.

Xarn felt it. He stretched his immaterial hands, and they were claws. He twitched his eyebrows, and they moved as commanded. And with a form came schemes. Xarn noticed now not only his own mind, developing once more as his power grew, but those of the other Gods as well He felt their emotions, shared them, became them. Soon, he would be...

Poena trained with the firstborn. She was still clumsy and not as skilled as they, but her godly powers helped her. Sometimes, when they frustrate her, they would instantly collapse, tortured by a deeply rooted pain. She hated most weapons that she was granted, but Ertanon she admired. The blade was hers, and the blade was her. Poena refused to use a shield, instead doing her best to deflect incoming hits with her sword.

Not a single hit did she land on the flesh of Gheronaton's Chosen during an entire week of training, but when she finally did, after parrying the several hits launched in a folly of attack by the least skilled of her trainers, after sparks of hot metal fled off the armor and weapons, the sword took a bite into the shoulder of the unprepared warrior. A lashing pain not only stunned the warrior, but struggled control of the combatant as well. The sword absorbed whatever blood attempted to gout out of the wound, and only when Poena pulled back the steaming blade with its redly glow did the pain stop and the wound bleed.

Pale and tired the warrior fell down onto the ground, drained of not only blood, but the essence of life as well.

<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>

Careless Creation. From carelessness came disaster.

Xarn had seen it before, not only during, but before his slumber as well. The Gods weren't incompetent, but they made many mistakes. His form drifted along Aether as he watched the harbinger of a great disaster that might soon strike the hapless planet without intervention.

Ozymi, a gigantic piece of rock, that seemed to constantly compress itself under its own mass, threatening to not only pull Maia out of its orbit, but also to collide into the Black Star within not much more than a month of time. He knew very well that if that were to happen, the Gods might have to start over and rebuild a lot of their works.

Focus was all it would take..

<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>

Poena had stared at the dying warrior for a moment, shocked, but then something slipped into her mind. She felt an urge that she could not resist, and she obliged, facing Coradin within the shortest of moments.

"Destroy Ozymi."

<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>

Astra'ath. A God that was a slumbering danger to the universe.
About a week passed, but already did many women carry monstrous children in their wombs, deep inside the caverns of the Nameless World. Little did even Xarn know of this, although some of Astra'aths works went more noticed.

Xarn's vigilant eyes caught a scene in the Armada: Astra'aths first failure. Most of the few surviving Vanguard deflected, using not only their weapons, but their bodies as well to carve Astra'aths mark from their bodies, turning on those that didn't, with an advantage in both numbers and skill as they swept down on the worshipers of the strange God. Finishing off all sympathetics within moments, the remaining Vanguard, not much more than a dozen, surrounded Sothurn, ready to kill him for the stone he was carrying, hoping to regain favour with their first master by giving it to him..

Within a matter of seconds the new stars took their place on the infinitely far facade that surrounded the universe, moving ever so slowly.

Akat'Av was met initially with hostility by Aether's inhabitants, but within time one of them dared approach them; a younger man named 'Curio', his hair long and wild, who approached him with a question. "How much can you teach me?"

The Great Ship dissolved into Chaos as the many AI's not only fought the Morai, but each other as well. Defensive mechanisms shot at each other, some sections destroyed themselves, and power outage threatened the more vital sections of the huge vessel.

Only one world did Xarn survey that he thought was peaceful. The new civilizations of the Nameless World went about building themselves homes and villages. Not only did their settlements already provide them with safety, but they prospered mutually..

It was chaos, and Xarn made a decision.
As Xarn's fist shone brightly, his tail slashed the Essence, the Foundation. Three more Gods were born: Quôth, Màquines and Tarn.

Xarn knew his reasons were simple; more Gods meant more Chaos, but more Chaos meant order. The new Gods would assure for the universe to stay alive, and become even more so in due time.

Poena mortally wounded one of Gheronatons chosen during a session of sparring.
Ozymi is about to pull Maia (and Aether) out of their course.
Ozymi, if it remains on course, will crash into the Black Star.
Poena orders Coradin to destroy Ozymi.
Although neither Deepspawn nor Starspawn have been born, many women have been impregnated in the Spawning Pools.
Most still-living Vanguard deflected from Astra'aths religion by erasing their marks, and about a dozen of them survived, now surrounding Sothurn.
Akat'Av is shunned by the Aether Elves, although it is approached by a man named 'Curio'.
Curio is now a historical figure.
The Great Ship's AIs fight each other, causing Morai deaths, malfunction and damage to the ship itself, and a threat to the ships essential areas as well.
The civilizations on The Nameless World prosper in peace.
Quôth, Màquines and Tarn were born into the universe. (With only one act each)

The situation of 'Soul Confusion' ended with only very minor damage to the several worlds.

"So you say that Poenas sword drained you of your life force?" Gheronaton asked his reborn Firstborn. "Yes, Lord War. It was as if the blade drank my blood and my essence. It.. I never felt such a pain before."

Gheronaton nodded and dismissed the firstborn. While he knew, from a previous encounter, that she could disable his firstborn it was suprising that she was able to enchant weapons as well. Or maybe it was not suprising; She was the daughter of Xarn, after all.

He waved this thoughts away. He needed to focus on something else. He needed to find a way to amplify his power. While Gheronaton didn`t fear astra`ath he knew that his foe was mighty. Maybe too mighty for him, even though he hated to admit it.

"So.. What makes him so mighty?" He asked himself, wondering.

Seeing the problems caused by Ozymi, Dragnar decides to take action. The unimaginable destruction it could cause would destroy most of the civilizations in existence, and take all their knowledge with it. He alters the planet, twisting it's form in impossible directions until it's size has been reduced to that of a normal planet. One walking on it's surface would perceive it as being as massive as before, but most of it's surface area and mass have been shifted into higher dimensions, where their gravity cannot effect the rest of the universe.

Dragnar shifts most of Ozymi's mass into higher spacial dimensions.

They circled around him, swords ready, snarling. Sothurn kept the Stone close to him. While he had it, he still had a chance.
They were inside another wrecked starship, and most of their kind now dwelled here.
Dead on the cold, metal floor.
Sothurn had rallied the loyalists against the traitors, and they had cut into them without mercy. When the last of his followers had died, Sothurn had kept fighting.
There had been nearly a hundred traitors. They had attacked, but the Stone had kept him safe from harm, mostly.

Another blow came from behind - Dashere herself. Some part of his mind was surprised to find out she had survived the battles, but most of him concentrated only on the fighting. He was fully open to the Stone, using all of it's power against the last few traitors.
Dashere's sword bit deep into his body from the side, but he ignored it. He did not feel any pain, and was already covered in dozens of little cuts.
Another attack from his side, but this one was easy to deflect. He pushed the attacker away, but this left him vulnerable. The traitors saw their chance, and three new blows sliced through him.

Sothurn knew he couldn't keep this up forever, but would stay loyal to Astra'ath until the end.
The traitors were getting more confident now, and were attacking more often. Fools.
A vulnerable spot there - he brought the sword down and the traitor screamed - and another weakness to be exploited there. The second attack threw Dashere straight to the wall.

He growled, an animal-like sound, and advanced upon the helpless traitor. However, before he could reach her, two more strikes came from behind.
Another blade cut deep into his feet. Pain, even though it was minimal, reached him.
Before he could counter-attack, the same traitor struck again. He felt the world blur and fell face-down on the floor. The pain was now clearly there.
He looked up.

Sothurn's legs had been neatly separated from his body, and new, stronger waves of pain and horror assaulted his mind.
Concentration failed, the power of the Stone harder to grasp.
This was it. Sothurn knew that, but also realized something else.
In the end, nobody was there for him. Astra'ath's promises of belonging to a 'brood' and the Vanguard's empty oaths of allegiance were all proven false as life slowly left his body.
He wanted to scream, but could no longer form words.

The world went black.

Sothurn's body finally stopped twitching, and the Stone of Madness fell from his grasp. The traitors looked at eachother. After nobody objected, Dashere bent over and took the Stone.

The traitors began to move, out from the dead ship, out from the Armada.
Heading for the Refuge.

Sothurn is killed, and the last few remaining Guardians head for the Refuge with the Stone

Quietly, Luna looked at her blade she had forged. It was an elegant, beautiful thing, yet deadly as well. It was as much a work of art as it was a weapon. Yet even now she hesitated. It was one thing to make a weapon and promise to use it, it was very much another thing to actually wield it for its intended purpose. She wondered if it came down to it, she would actually be able to take lives with it if called to do so. Could one who loved and cherished peace become a warrior?

Yet, even as these doubts clouded her thoughts, the memory of the murdered elves rose in her mind, reminding her of the price of inaction and failing to oppose the mad gods. Reluctantly, she concluded that if it was what it took to defend her creations, she would fight. Standing, she sheathed her blade at her waist, and went to the dark regions of Aether, the territory the nightgaunts had claimed. It might not come to war, but if it did, she would be ready. But she would try words one last time.

“Creations of Astra’ath, heed me,” Luna said, walking among them. “I have made this a land of peace, yet you taint it with nightmares and fear. I had sent a message to you previously, but it had gone unanswered. I repeat it now. If you wish to stay, renounce Astra’ath and cease your plague of nightmares on mortals. If you do not, then you must leave. And if you do not leave Aether, I will personally force you from my lands. I warn you, do not spurn my words again.” She drew her rapier at her conclusion, showing them the divinely wrought blade that could pierce even godly flesh. “Creations of Astra’ath, what is your answer?”

<><><><><>

A small group of the Aether dragons flew among the empty space, towards Gheronaton’s world. Their feelings were mixed. Some remembered the constant battle of their previous life with fondness, others with apprehension, and others still with indifference. But they were not aiming for Incendium, but for the plate worlds that now orbited it, as they were commanded by Luna.

Soaring down through the trees, the dragons landed in the forest. The elves at first were frightened, but some began to recognize the energy in them. They felt a sense of familiarity, and some remembered the crystalline lands of Aether. The dragons busied themselves, taking the great crystals they had carried in their claws and setting them up. Before long, they had constructed a gate, and a portal opened back to the shimmering lands.

“Your exile ends,” One of the dragons said. “If you wish, you may return home through this gate. Return when you will, for this gate will stand open for all time. If you wish to stay, know that there will always be a way home for you, should you ever choose to change your mind.”

Luna delivers an ultimatum to the nightgaunts on Aether. Basically, leave Astra’ath and stop making nightmares or leave Aether.

Act 1: Send some Aether dragons to construct a gate to Aether on the forest plate to let the elves return home.

Gheronaton`s Ironborn had labored day and night on Ferraria.

The insight came two nights ago. How could he have been that ignorant? Astra`ath seemed to thrive on fear. Their fear and the fear of everything in the universe.

And if astra`ath could draw power from fear, why shoulnd`t the god of war be able to thrive on battle? He had tried it, and it was as easy as drawing power from the void.. Yet, he had to choose between those two power sources- He wasn`t able to draw power from both at once. It was an hard decision, for drawing strength from battle would make him more powerful but also more vulnerable than before. But he had made up his mind.

And for the last time he used the power of the void and enchanted their creation.

Then he left Ferraria and visited the dwarves. They had already begun to resettle their world and already had built several small cities and villages.  And Gheronaton watched them a while, content.

Then he descended and called all those to him that worshipped him. It were many, but not all. But that would be changed.
"My loyal followers! I watched your progress and you make me proud. I also saw how faithful you are and thus i want to reward you."

And as he spoke this words some ironborn and firstborn came forth, carrying weapons and armor. "This is my gift to you; Weapons and armor. And the knowledge how to make them. From this day on you shall be the master of the countless metals of the earth and your might and splendor shall be endless. All i want in turn is your worship. Ye shall worship no god but me and ye shall fight side by side with me in the upcoming wars. In turn i will protect you and if you prove worthy the doors to my halls shall be opened for you. Go and spread the word and hone your skills of battle."

He then left the planet of plates and visited Incendium. He manifested himself as a colossal pillar of flame and bellowed "Hear me; Giants and dragons and tribes of many names. I am Gheronaton, Lord of War and honor; Granter of live and glory eternal. Hear me! You shall worship no god but me, shall have no master but me, shall obey no laws but mine and those that honor dictates. Those that oppose me will be crushed, those that remain faithful shall be rewarded! Already some defied me and my wrath was great and they were smashed, and died the death of cowards!
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war! Revel in slaughter and hone your skills, for you are the favored children of the one and only true god and you shall be my warriors in the wars that lie ahead! Glory! Honor! Slaughter!"

His voice made the earth tremble; But even louder where the answering calls. "Havoc! War! Honor!"

And then he ascended back into the sky and concentrated himself on all the bloodshed, on every single fight and ongoing conflict in the universe. And he felt how new power surged through his godly veins.

Gheronaton forges something. And enchants it.

Then Gheronaton gives the Dwarves weapons and armor and his firstborn are ordered to  teach them how to smith and how to wage war. They shall also persuade some of the cities to wage war against each other.

Then Gheronaton shows himself to the dwarves and the inhabitants of incendium and from now on he shall draw power from battle and from his worshipers.

Drifting in darkness, Sothurn's soul departs his body. It drifts free for a time, and is tugged towards the Well of Souls.

Something moves in the darkness, slithery and silent.

He sees the well approaching and knows, in a detached sort of way, that he will probably not survive. The Well consumes most souls that enter it, returning them to the Essence from whence they came.

Suddenly something grabs him, powerful and implacable. A shining band of energy like a rope, no, a tentacle has wrapped around his ethereal form. He struggles briefly, but stops as a sound distracts him. It is a throbbing sound, like a heartbeat, but felt more than heard... as though it were causing ripples in the void itself. Voices speak, a chorus of whispers and shouts all talking at once.

It loses faith / It despairs

We do not allow Our Brood to fall

The endless Cycle must be maintained

They die, they are reborn

They do not leave Our service

Come home, Broodling

And join your Kin

Rushing fills Sothurn's ears as its soul is yanked away from the yawning maw of the Well. Darkness and pressure fills its senses, as though it were being compressed. Finally it loses consciousness, blissfully unaware of anything save that throbbing heartbeat.

Astra'ath takes the souls of the fallen Vanguard and plants them in the first generation of Starspawn to be born. Their experience and memories will carry on in the new bodies, and they are spared annihilation in the Well of Souls.

Sothurn's soul is kept close at hand. We have plans for this one.

Deep within the Nameless World, Astra'ath summons Bhulotha before It.

Take the Cultists and find the surface of this world.

Scour the caverns for sentience.

Find Us food, Find Us followers

Upon the surface, be discrete

Do not upset the balance

Abduct only one or two from each village

To add to Our Brood

We require new blood

Upon the dark side of Aether, the nightgaunts gather before Luna. They merge, becoming a solid form, and speak with one whispering voice.

we seek only to exist

our purpose is to balance

dream must be tempered with nightmare

we do not harm your creations

all things must fear

to be without fear is to be without caution, ambition, or hope

As ever, it is a privilege to serve, Great One,” The wounded dragon said, bowing low before Astra’ath. He spread his pierced wings, and flew to the settlements of the cultists. There, he gathered the swiftest and the keenest of eye and ear, and those who best knew how to navigate the caverns. He bade them equip and arm themselves, and to begin mapping the caverns. They were to find what they could, and return with knowledge of any races or paths to the surface. Bhulotha himself took to the air, and explored the deepest caverns for life that Astra’ath might use.

<><><><><>

“I know you have not harmed my creations, which is why I came to speak rather than to fight. Nor do I not belittle the necessity of fear. I agree it is necessary for many situations, and can even save lives when one is confronted with danger.” Luna said. “But the indiscriminate nightmares serve little purpose. They do not guide the dreamer away from danger, the fear they produce is needless, and worse, harmful. There is a balance already, where the toil, work, and fear of the day is met by the rest and rejuvenation sleep at night brings. Nightmares upset this balance, and serve only to feed the hunger of Astra’ath.”

“But even nightmares may have a place in these worlds, I am willing forgive that and reach a compromise. But the other demand remains unanswered. Where do your loyalties lie, nightgaunts? I will abide no servant of Astra’ath upon my creation, I am adamant upon this.”

A messenger appears before the dozen surviving Vanguard who have turned from Astra'ath's service. The nightgaunt forms a robed figure with an empty hood, and speaks with its whispered voice.

the master bids the return

your kin are reborn in Its service

under Our sign you will not fall

you pledged your service to Astra'ath

for your release from the curse

if you renounce your service

you will be returned to the star

It fades away with the final whisper, and power builds around the rebellious Vanguard. Astra'ath would not let them reach the Refuge with the stone. If they did not return to Its service, the curse would be reinstated and they would be cast back into the star for breaking their pact.

One does not break a deal with a god.

The nightgaunts gathered before Luna seem to hesitate, she can sense their sadness, then they disperse. They could not stand against her wrath, and so will find a new home. Their task would not stop though, it is a divine appointment and central to their society.

All across Aether, shadows rise from the dark side of the crystal ring and spread into the void; they seek a home to call their own.

Coming into existence was a curious feeling. Not at all unpleasant, just odd.
Màquines stretched her newly formed body and looked around at the universe, the stars all around twinkled and seemed to constantly shift before her eyes, the constellations were not her prime concern,  that was in fact the bigger stars and planets that were much closer. Three nearby stars, two that appeared to be orbiting the biggest, a bright yellow star. Thinking for a moment she realized that she knew the names of all the stars and planets.
Unfortunately, they were all the creations of other gods, and Màquines did not think they would look kindly at her squatting there. Instead she tried out her godly powers by creating a planet that orbited rather close to the green star Elan.
Humming while she worked, Màquines decided to name the small planet Savoia. When she finished, she realized that she had made the planet without life-plant or otherwise. It would do well to keep it simple for now, and as such, she chose to cover the planet with nothing more than grass. Descending to her newly created planet, she took the form of a fawn, still humming. She wondered about the other gods, and what they were like.

Màquines makes the savanna planet of Savoia. It is about the size of Mercury.

The shadows near Màquines coalesce, coming together to form a robed figure which floats in the air and flutters gently in the breeze. The figure's empty hood turns to the fawn-shaped god and speaks, a soft whisper which seems to be carried on the wind.

"Pardon? Enjoy?",quickly returning to the form of a human Màquines looked around, making sure she didn't inadvertently make anything but plant life. Indeed, there were no lakes or rivers, just the hot sun shining down and the grass waving in the breeze.
Twirling a lock of hair in her fingers, she raised her eyes to the shadows before her. "You can enjoy it as you wish, but I have a bit of a request for you. I need to learn about the world as it stands, and as such I would appreciate it if you told me about the gods, and what have you. "
She started humming again. 'After all,' she thought  'I wouldn't want my new home to be destroyed after all the effort'

The empty hood of the robed figure nods to Màquines, acknowledging her words.

we thank you for your welcome, and we will honor your request

this world is a busy one, filled with chaos and conflict. the gods are at the center of the conflict. there are many gods, but first we would tell you of our master.

Astra'ath, the Elder god, The One who is Many. it created us to balance the world of dreams, and bring nightmares to those mortals who deserve them. we show them fear and pain and loss and bring their fear to our master.

we have come here because Luna, goddess of dreams, has cast us out of Aether, the crystal ring.

The nightgaunt looks to the sky, its empty hood fluttering in some nonexistant breeze. Above, thousands of shadowy forms descend to examine the world. They fly amongst the tall grass of the world-spanning savannah and examine everything in detail. The one before Màquines seems to commune silently with its kin, then turns back to her.

your creation is interesting. by your leave, we would like to stay here for a time.

we will remain on the night side of the world, and answer any questions you have for us for we know many things about the gods and the mortals. we see every dream they have

A nightgaunt forms outside of the library and slowly floats into the entrance. It drifts past surprised librarians and sages, through hallways and turns, passing right through a door and into the room where Aerie is being cared for. It looks down at her for a while, then looks to the side where the dark blade Thuthacar is propped against the wall.

It reaches down to touch the girl's forehead. She is sweating profusely, a fever raging from infection in her severed leg. The nightgaunt gently raises her sleeve, seeing the incomplete elder sign marked into her flesh.

this will not do, we cannot have you die little one. you are important to the master.

It looks again to Thuthacar, then floats over and reaches for the sword. It takes a supreme effort for the gaunt to physically manifest, but it lifts the blade and completes the elder sign on Aerie's arm. The symbol flares red, and immediately Aerie's face relaxes. Her color comes back, and she looks much healthier than she did a moment ago.

Thuthacar falls to the floor with a clatter, the gaunt exhausted from the strain. It flutters there for a moment, then enters Aerie's dreams to rest. The robed figure drifts into Aerie's body; drawn like a funnel into her forehead, it vanishes entirely.
