Rigoth quietly scribbled in his journal, when suddenly a shout came from Akant, who was scouting ahead.
"What is is, Akant?" Rigoth yelled back. "Another Yeti?"
"Comrades! The river source is ahead! We have arrived!"
A massive shout went up from the once-tired dwarves as they surged out of the wagon, barreling past the started dog and donkey and onto the bank of the frozen river and the slightly-thawed silty clay loam. Despite Yeti warnings from Akant, the only other inhabitants of this bleak land were four wolves and whatever lurked below their boots.

From the Journal of Rigoth Gusilendok

3rd Granite 142-
Finally found a damned calendar that listed when we left. No wonder it's so damned cold, it's still winter! Anyways, the river is here and all, so this appears to be where we should stop. Immediatley upon stopping, the other dwarves voted Steinn as Expedition Leader. I don't know what they hope to achieve by this. Maybe they're irritated after my forced rationing attempt last month, but we need that booze!

Anyways, I've laid out plans for a mine in a mountain near where we stopped. Though the eventual fortress will be above ground, we need temporary shelter from the cold and a source for rock. The seeds we brought along also need to be planted beneath the earth. Despite my worries, there is fertile soil here, and even exposed surface loam! Perhaps the rumored magma seas are warming this land up? No matter. This mountain is rich in ores and gems, and we will soon be shipping it off to increase the power of communism. For Onul!

Rigoth closed his journal and set off to help mine. The glacier did seem suspiciously warmer than expected (though still damn cold), but the promised gems were already popping from the rock and several exposed veins of limonite were virtually next to the mine. It was almost to good. And even as they first struck the earth, far away on the other side of Oslmo Tosm, prisoners convicted of crimes against the state were ordered to begin the long march to Iklistcerol, Whisperedlens, the new final destination for those against the Red Dwarves.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.

From the Journal of Rigoth
1st Limestone 142

Thirsty... so thirsty...
We ran out of booze... a month after arriving. Nobody... listened. *ahem*
Me and Dmitri dug down. Hoped to find water. Water... it's unpalatable. We were just able to get farms up in there too. Nothing to brew.
3 prisoners in a temp cell. They're starving right now. No food for us, much less... them.
Steinn, Akant, Diab, Derek... dead. We stuck them in the barracks, Too cold outside. No coffins.
I'm trying to sort plants right now... which are edible? At this point, I don't care. Starving.
This glacier is cursed. The river is mocking us.

Rigoth shakily closed his journal, perhaps for the last time. She took a dank and musty sip from the makeshift pool that they now drank from. His comrades... dead. She went back to sorting plants. The few survivors knew their time was limited. If the beasts across the pool attacked, or anything came from the unexplored depths, they had no protection. She thought back to his previous statement, about how the fortress was ridiculously doomed.
"How right I was" she muttered.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, so the river hates me, and didn't thaw (hey, it's not cold enough to give dwarves frostbite, so why not?). The caves were much farther down than usual, and I started digging for them way to late. I haven't even gotten to naming the prisoners yet, though you might not want me to, they're starving to death currently. The only surviving Communists are Rigoth, Dmitri and Niktia. I'm seeing if this is salvageable, if so the 4 dead will get a place in the Grand Socialist Common Burial Hall. Right now they're rotting in the sealed off barracks.

Dang. All that backstory for nothing. Oh well, it's dwarf fortress. All I'm disappointed by is how little story we've gotten; there were plenty more words you could've milked from those events.

Wow. If this survives and a prisoner comes with doctor skills, could you name him Diab and mention him having a tendency to look at Rigoth accusingly for no reason?

Hmmm... Hold off on naming me until the fort is relatively stable.  By stable, I mean you are able to provide food and water.

From the journal of Rigoth

11th Limestone 142
The situation is stabilizing. Though my fellow miner Dmitri went a  little crazy and ran around tantruming before calming down, and we're all on the breaking point, we have seeds in the ground, almost ready to harvest. I've sustained us by picking plants, and we are planning to butcher the animals soon, but we shouldn't have any more deaths now that there is a stable source of water (disgusting and reptile-man contaminated as it is). A Giant Olm crawled out of the water, but I managed to drive my pick into the beast's skull after wounding it several times. Though more confident about our prospects after the event, if those beastmen ever attack...

Even through tragedy, we make progress. The cavern has been explored a bit more, and more open space has been located that can substitute for a  farm instead of the river. (later edit- scratch that, beastmen live there. Need expendables) A tunnel is going to be dug soon. Dmitri has also mentioned the possibility of pumping any magma we find into a river-melting device. I think he's crazy, but he seems to believe it will work. We also now have doors across the main entrance, which can be locked if more prisoners or enemies show up. Speaking of prisoners, our current ones have finally died, after pounding constantly on the door for almost a month after they arrived and were locked in. It is unfortunate that we weren't able to use them, but considering our problems with feeding ourselves... hopefully the caravan will come soon and alleviate our problems somewhat. I am going to assign Dmitri to craft duty in preparation. Here's one to not dieing!

2nd Moonstone, 142
6 new migrants arrived today, and with them brought pets, who now reside in our food stockpile. The new prisoners seem rather downbeat already, though starvation probably isn't helping with that much. I interacted with them a bit, against the rules, to pick up their butchered animals, and they were barely holding back from full-on punching me. Maybe the pick crusted with Olm blood scared them a bit though. Hopefully the caravan, which are wholly unprepared for by the way due to other issues, will help our food situation enough that this crop of workers doesn't die.

17th Moonstone, 142
Dammit dammit dammit! I finally got a working trade depot up, though why the supply caravan refused to simply give us goods and take our (admittedly meager) production on normal ground befuddles me, but by the time we got the stuff to the depot the supply caravan decided it had taken to long and simply took off. I managed to drag a pack off of one of the mules before it ran off, but we didn't get much in the way of supplies. Maybe the cat will be useful, though. I heard they are great cave explorers, and cat tallow biscuits sound absolutely scrumptious at this point, though butchering and the farm finally producing are helping.

---------------------------------------------------
Well, phew. The food and drink situation is moderately fine, and the dwarves seem to be doing better. I'll get around to building the town and dwarfing prisoners, well, as soon as I can. The biggest problem is preventing inner-class (guards and prisoners) relationships. I might have the guards toss the prisoners a pick when I make one and have them establish their own temp fortress so I can lock the guards in until the prisoners have a basic structure set up. Right now the guards do most of the work and pass the prisoners food through an airlock.
