I've now made it into high rank. Jesus, this is a lot tougher.

Well.
The only reason I'd finally decided to give a handheld MH a chance is that they brought out the second joystick attachment for the 3DS, so I could continue using the classic control scheme.

I was just informed yesterday that despite this game being the sole reason said joystick attachment exists, they didn't bother implementing the option to use it for attacking.

I feel a bit like crying. I love this series so hard, but if it's crappy PSP-style controls or nothing from here on out, I guess I'm going to have to sit out the next few installments.

What? Using the joystick to attack? Two camera sticks is so perfect I can't imagine voluntarily using anything else.

I was so excited for the lock-on camera button in this, then I realized that the double camera sticks were so great I really didn't use it at all.

Honestly I haven't had any major issues with the controls, admittantly when I remember I can use the D-pad on the touch screen to manipulate the camera. Underwater is a pain but the lock on helps you get adjusted.

Also I kinda steamrolled Barroth, I was expecting more from the first major roadblock in the game. I had more trouble with qurupeco really.

I guess it's a good thing because I'm gonna need to grind him for large monster bones.  :P

Also on 3DS, so no online for me.

Back in my day we didn't have any camera sticks. We had a single camera button that you used to centre the camera, and on rare, special occasions we'd take our thumb off the movement joystick to swivel things left or right with the d-pad. And that was good enough for us!

Ah, Playstation stuff. That makes more sense now.

So I jumped into high rank, got my ass kicked by a Rathian, and have now resigned myself to restarting the process of Great Jaggi -> Royal Ludroth -> Qurupeco. Then I'll probably get my ass kicked by a summoned Deviljho instead of the typical Rathian that low rank people get killed by.

Also I can't upgrade most of my weapons until I get to the tundra and I'm really hoping killing a Pink Rathian isn't required to get there.

3DS controls actually aren't that bad. I started using a bow and the center-on-monster camera is amazingly good.

it isn't required, and i know how you feel. was using the barely-upgraded GS you get from the starter chest up until i got to the tundra.

If you wanna hit the Tundra early, you can use the Tavern to go to it before you unlock it in the Village. Just pick the Gathering one, so something big doesn't eat your face off!

Guys, this is high rank tundra, not normal tundra. I'd have to complete a hell of a lot of tavern missions to get there.

Also when I got high rank quests, the chick basically told me "Kill some subspecies." I've killed the crimson qurupeco and the purple ludroth. That just leaves Mrs Pink. I am scared.

So I'm getting this game next week. Suffice to say, I am excited. Any tips for a newcomer to the series?

I find the game is better experienced with no tip at all. If you start hitting a wall later in the game, you may consult to get some information about the armor mechanics and whatnot, but the start is a blast if you play it blind.

Not getting hit > dealing damage.

Select armor for skills over defense; Defense is the least useful stat as ideally you won't get hit.

And even if you do, there are armor skills for that too, if I understand correctly. :P
