Nice dorms vs. meager bedrooms
« on: April 13, 2010, 06:30:34 am »

I've been thinking about that for some time now. Since the wiki never stated what -exactly- dormitories are I generally hesitated to build them. Now, the thing that's preventing me from doing so is... that dwarves will sleep anywhere they please anyway...

But assuming it would work, what do you think would be better? Meager rooms for oneself or that one legendary dormitory with the adamantine artifact statue and 150 beds in it?

A modest room for the dwarf himself would work better. Whenever a dwarf sleeps in a dormitory, you get a "slept without a proper room recently" thought, which is not good.

I have found my dwarfs to be happier with there own rooms, but then again I havn't tried making the dorm to be uber nice.

I prefer to give each of mine a nice LARGE room, but I also like to dig...a lot.

Nothing wrong with a 3 by 3 room! Most people go for something like a 2 by 2 or even 3 by 1, so I think I'm being kind to my dwarfs.

I always give dwarves a 2x2 room of their own.
If I'm short of time, space, or I get a large migrant wave, I'll chuck another bed in an existing room and double-constrain the area as two bedrooms in one.

I like to have a dorm with 20 or so spare beds, to take care of any large waves until I can get more rooms, but in general I will have about 200 bedrooms after the second year.

Dwarf comfort is a high priority, because a happy worker is an efficient worker!

I go for nice 5x2 rooms for my dwarves, but I have a small dormitory when I have a wood shortage.

The biggest flaw with big shared bedrooms is if a tantrum strikes...

With induvidual rooms you have some sort of control.

Don't nice big rooms mean the dwarves can't afford them once the economy kicks in? I always used 2x2 for non nobles but i'll be adding some bargain basement beds in my next fortress.

My own hunch is that a dwarf will feel better having a rubbish room to themself than a bed in the best dormitory but i've never tested it.

I just turn economy off.

As it is, it only acts as a place holder until Toady gets around to the economy arc and makes things work, so I go without it, but if I'm in the mood to challenge myself with it, I build an array of single tile rooms, 2 by 2, 3 by 3 and 4 by 5, then let them move into what they can afford.

Draining there pockets with nice rooms is a good way to stop them from buying everything.

I would like you to take a look at what forum your posting in. Now to clarify, nerdy for nerd standards, or did reality just hit you?

Haha, I am well aware where i'm at and that I frequently scare new DF players among my friends with the horror stories of the community (whilst praising it in about any other gaming forum I reside in)

It was just a moment of clarity. Like a brief moment of sunlight shining through a dark forest, giving me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

I never said it was a bad feeling :P
