Jreengus occurred.
« on: April 25, 2008, 01:25:00 am »

quote:
You can view the wars/battles/important duels in a nested way, but when kobolds are involved, it just says things like "Shroler began." and "Jreengus occurred." The names given to these sorts of events by other civilizations aren't much better, but at least you can tell what they are when they call something the Molten War or the Siege of Nails or... the Assault of Troopers... or the Conflict of Attack...

I don't know, I rather like "Jreengus occurred."  I can just see some creepy half-kobold historian (who looks rather like Smeagol) saying that.  "What happened in 1048?"  "Jreengus occurred."  With an ugly grin on its face, and maybe even one of those quietly evil chuckles.

In 982, the kobold army of Bangin, led by the kobold spearmaster Blutgreenikus, assaulted the kobold cave of Shlurdiseen in the battle known as Banginblutgreenikusshlurdiseen.

I think I'm going to be paying a lot more attention to kobolds come the next release...

Perhaps if the Kobold language had a heuristic pattern to it so that we could "understand" after having experienced enough of their history it would be alright.

For instance, you mention Jreengus, why not have words ending in "gus" to imply conflict?

Ragnarok came to mind when I read that. I think it'd be cool for very large events to have a chance for simple names like that, eventually.

Personally, I'd rather see a battle named The Breakfast of Champions.

EDIT:  You know you're tired when you end a statement with a question mark.

When I first skimmed over it, I thought it was referring to the way kobolds listed their births.  "Shroler began",  "Jreengus occurred",  "Blitikus happened", "Shlobulder started" etc.

Kobolds use utterances, which is what we call the sounds that animals use to communicate. Utterances are instinctual and are not learned. Two cats that have never seen another cat before could communicate (to the extent that cats can communicate) as soon as they were introduced to each other as easily as a pair of cats that had lived in a large group their entire lives.

You can't say "Jreengus" without grinning at the end of it.

You understand you just let the a priori and a posteriori cat out of the bag, don't you?

They're just too cool to bother making up a language.

You can say more without words than you think. Have you ever "talked" to someone who's language you don't speak and vice versa? Grunting, hand-waving and things like that can get a lot of messages across.
