I think the reason this community has memes is because a whole bunch of its members are from 4chan. It's done out of habit.

Places had memes before 4chan, they just weren't called "memes" and they weren't as widespread. There's nothing at all wrong with forum in-jokes or anything, but forcing them is ridiculous.
