DF has invaded my mind.
« on: April 06, 2010, 05:44:32 pm »

My coworker just got up to search for something, but quickly gave up and went back to his meal.  My first thought, word for word, was "John, electrician, canceled search: eating."

There was once a rotting raccoon corpse on the road I take every morning to the bus stop, and every time I'd pass by it I would imagine the surroundings in DF-style descriptions, including the miasma cloud.

I just had the following conversation:

Boyfriend: "Hey, want to see Avatar?"
Me: "Nah, busy playing Dwarf Fortress."
Boyfriend: "..."

I was also dreaming about designating mining sections...

To start sleeping, I often think of how I will expand my fort or kill some demons.
I also think of Discworld dwarves as the DF dwarves for some reason, even though they may be quite different.

You have a strange love life. Good on you for avoiding Avatar, though.

You think he's exaggerating...I walk into the campus lounge with a bottle of powerade and get hit in the face with a rhesus macaque...

Speaking of which, how is fire in the new version?
out of personal experience, where a dwarf was set alight by a magmaman, ran up 150 flights of stairs, and divebombed into the booze stockpile, I'd have to say fire is the same as always.

Joke is too easy, but I also compliment you on avoiding that overhyped dribble.

Ten years, and all they could do was rip off Dances With Wolves, and couldn't even match that movie's quality in writing. "Unobtanium," are you ****ing kidding me...?

But this isn't the "I hate Avatar" topic so I'll stop now.

Only DF players and geologists get this irratated by silly names for metals. I approve greatly!

I, too, fall asleep thinking about Megaprojects.  I had an idea for a facsimile of a Klein Bottle, but decided that I had better figure out how to force a Mobius Strip first.  I'll also think of ways to move water from one place to another.

I frequently see myself doing the entrance dance to school buildings.  And wonder where the lever is that locks the five billion doors to the UMC in case a Goblin siege comes, because you KNOW my college doesn't have a military ready.

And when you build your fortress walls from the bones of skeletal elephants, slain my weapons forged from melted goblin plunder, fed on cattle that graze on grass that blinks.  Then, you will know dwarfdom.

A couple weeks ago I was sick, feverish, but nevertheless I had played DF all day and then did my taxes all evening.

That night I had fever-fueled nightmares of having to figure out the exact value of each and every piece of my nobles' gem-encrusted furniture so I could deduct it properly.  **shudder**

It bothered me too, because it's an offhand phrase scriptwriters use to refer to generic plot objects, specifically a plot object the protagonist needs that's arbitrarily difficult to acquire in order to facilitate plot momentum. Calling it unobtanium is about as bad as if the case in Pilp Fiction was explicitly referred to as "a Macguffin brand briefcase."

ACTUALLY, Unobtanium is a real term used by Geologists. It refers to ore other minerals that have a LOW level of appearance or production when refined...

The reason behind Avatar's choice of the name was that when the Humans found pandora and discovered this mineral, they found it difficult to mine and refine, thus tagging it with the name, Unobtainium. After so many years, the name stuck...
