You can look for a site without the Aquifer tag or use the site-finder. There is a way to mod them out too, but I don't know it.

I guess I just need to adhere real life geology to Dwarf Fortress. Everywhere that's flat or little hills has 2-3 aquifer levels.

Actually, look around mountains and you'll find a side of the mountain where the non-aquifer area extends a decent distance (probably has to do with rainfall and the simulated weather patterns). Especially if you use a region instead of island gen in the custom settings. You can find a lot of flat, non-aquifer land that way.

Thank you sir, I will explore this now. Much appreciated.

My glassmaker says that we don't have any sand-bearing items. I have a sand collection zone and several bags. What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: Nevermind. I was telling him to make glass instead of collect sand.  ::)

Is there a fence building anywhere? I seem to recall reading about a fence that takes fewer resources than a to fence in a pasture easily. I can't find it though and I don't remember if this was something implemented or just a suggestion that didn't make it.

I have a dwarf in a secretive mood that's "sketching a picture of a quarry" and I have plenty of rock and blocks but he's not picking up any of them.  Could it be that the dwarf is looking for a type of clay?

It's possible, I think clay counts as a stone.

Also, do Giant cave spiders silk webs randomly spawn in caverns? I have a few patches in one of mine, but I can't find the GCS.

In case anyone was wondering (I was)

You have to assign pastures to animals that need to graze or else they'll starve.

GCS are like vermin, they appear and disappear.

Dwarves don't want specific types of stone for moods anymore, do they?  This dwarf likes Dacite and there's none around.

Oh fuck... that would be a gamebreaker with the new mineral rarity, i may need to make all my workshops sealable again...
i stopped doing this after the fix to shell moods

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

I'm pretty sure dwarves will still want specific things for moods.

I thought they stopped doing that a few versions ago.

The only clay I have access to is silty clay.  Maybe they want regular clay or something.  I don't know.

Elven merchants stopped by.  Fire clay, silty clay, sandy clay, and clay loam are all considered stones but none of them seem to be working for the mood.

Wait, seriously? Giant Cave Spiders disappear and reappear?
