Do dwarfs need a thread to sew cloth/leather image?
Nope. Just a bit of cloth/leather and something to attach it to.

So, many versions ago Toady intentionally turned off the ability of dwarves to change clothes as a temporary workaround to the problem of dwarves leaving their old clothes all over a fortress as clutter.

That's like throwing the baby out with the bathwater, if you ask me.

this is obviously a minor issue.

I appreciate the sarcasm. This wouldn't be a big deal if we could just draft everyone and assign them uniforms even when off duty, but as it is there are still going to be three professions (miners, woodcutters, hunters, as mentioned earlier) who end up naked.

Is there a way to view legends mode after you've started a fortress on a map?

copy the save folder for the region you're playing (i.e. data>save>region3 or whatever) into the same directory. open that save. abandon the fort (will only affect that save AFAIK, but make sure it's copied to your desktop too ;)) and run legends.

All my kobolds got attacked and had their trolls eaten by some beast or another in year 2-3.

All my kobolds starved to death in year four.

I've been playing DF for a few months now, only now really starting to dabble with magma. And in the spirit of learning i've used dwarf liquids to fill some tunnels I'd dug below future workshops/forges.

My only problem is that I cna't actually build magma smelters yet. I know they are meant to be available once you discover it, so why haven't they been enabled on my build menu yet?

Is there a way to make goblins not go extinct? In this world, there isn't a single place in the world where "Goblins" are listed as neighbours.

If you just put magma in without discovering a vein/sea then you won't have the option, just dig a stairwell straight down to the sea and you can build them.

Any civilization(s) may be destroyed through wars in the worldgen, or it may simply fail to place them do to bad odds or difficulties (such as a lack of terrain they can spawn upon).

In the case of the former, it is possible that the dead civilization will reclaim a site several years later, and reappear. I have only witnessed an instance of this in the worldgen events, however- I have never seen it happen after game play begins.

Do you have to assign pastures, or is that just like assigning fishing zones: if you have it they'll use it, but assigning a zone helps keep them safe.

Is there any way to avoid aquifers without embarking on the side of a mountain? I really do hate hair thin z levels.
