Is it possible for dwarves to just say "fuck it" and stop cleaning? Almost everyone's clean labor is enabled, yet a couple of levels in my fort closest to the surface seem to have gone uncleaned for years. This is sort of a big deal seeing how everyone ends up coated in an unbelievable number of blood spatters and thus have to clean themselves over and over.

I know there are utilities that are supposed to take care of this (dfcleanmap comes to mind), plus I'm working up to making a mist generator or something, but I'm even more interested in the cause of this than in the remedy. Not cleaning the top levels of my central goddamn stairwell is crazy if they still sometimes clean floors deeper down.

Try setting up a meeting area where you want the dwarves to clean.

Sweet fuck, it's working! So being around all that blood and shit makes them more likely to clean it up? I thought the way these kinda jobs were being selected would be easier.

On a related topic, I know that in order not to have a dwarf wall themselves in one should commission two layers of walls and suspend the ones on the opposite side. Is there a similar trick for deconstructing? Those dipshits stand are prone to stand on the tile of a suspended construction when deconstructing, so the above trick won't work.

I know supports can be used to hold stuff up... but can they keep something from falling?

For example, if I build a 3x3 wall block in midair held up by a support, I know that will work. But if I were to create an overhang, say, 10z levels high, and build a 3x3 wall block underneath the overhand, could I attach it to a support, remove scaffolding, and then it would stay in place until I destroyed the support?

I'm trying to build a boot-shaped passageway over a lake so the only entrance will be under water (thus inaccessible to gobbos) and the support would be the easiest way to do it.

Also if I drop a column into a lake, will it penetrate the floor or will it just rest on the bottom? And if its top is higher than the water level and is otherwise completely closed off will the water not enter? And what happens to the displaced water?

That would probably work. Watch for pressure.

It will rest on the floor, the water will teleport right above it. water will enter if it's pressurized, make the only entrance into it diagonal to remove pressure to only that z-level.

By 'support', are you referring to the building called a 'support', or to actual constructions made from walls/floors/whatever?  Both Supports and constructions will hold up walls and other such structures both above and below them, so you can use a support to hang a structure from an overhanging roof.  Constructions (walls, floors, etc) will also hold up structures on adjacent tiles on the same level, but I'm pretty sure supports will not.

Yes, this will work.  Supports hold up objects below them if the top is anchored to something.

The falling column will punch through the bottom of the lake only if there is an open space directly beneath the lake floor.  Otherwise, it will not punch through.

If the column is made from constructed walls, it will deconstruct into its component materials when it hits the floor of the lake, and you'll have a pile of stones or blocks or whatever on the floor of the lake.  If it's made from naturally occurring stone or cast obsidian, it will become a column resting on the bottom of the lake.

The water that used to occupy that space will teleport upwards, appearing directly above the top of the column.  If the falling structure is a tube whose top is above the level of the lake, water won't be able to flow from the lake into it, but the water that occupied the space that the tube fell around will still be there, and some of the water that was displaced upwards may fall into the tube after it falls.  You'll have to pump or drain that out before you can use the tube as an entrance.

Can military dwarves with very high skills find themselves unable to revert to civilian tasks in the latest version, or did I make this notion up somehow?

Anyone with champion status (level 10 or higher fighter skill i think) will have all their civilian labors disabled when being in active military. If you need one of them to work for a while you will have to set their squad to inactive or remove them from the squad (and turn the civilian labor of choice on afterwards). This will result in an unhappy thought for the dwarf.

I meant if the water is, say, 4 levels, and the column is 5+.

If you have a 4 Z-layer deep lake, and drop a 5 Z-layer tall 3X3 column of natural rock into it from above, it will result in a pillar of rock resting on the lake floor and sticking 1 Z-layer out of the surface of the lake.  There will also be 4 Z-layers of water displaced upwards, which will splash down and spread out into the lake.  You can then dig down into the center of the pillar from above and make a safe entrance that lake water will not spill into.

Dear Diary,

Today I learned something awesome. The DF community is so cool. Especially Sphalerite, 'cause he's named after something in the game. <3

What steps do you have to do to get a drawbridge to raise? I have 3 linked to levers and I can see the mechanisms in the bridge with the t menu. Yet when I pull the lever, nothing happens.  >:(

Make sure that you've build a raising bridge, not a retracting bridge.  Link the bridge to a lever (which it sounds like you've done).  Pull the lever.  100 steps later the bridge should raise ... provided there isn't a creature over a certain size on the bridge, if there is nothing will happen.
