Butchering is horrible. Even something as small (relatively)as an elephant is enough to overload the workshop with the corpse alone.
Are you saying that a workshop filled with tons of raw elephant shouldn't be cluttered?
considering how dwarves know how to slaughter a live animal in mere moments, it shouldnt. My only guess is that it's easier to tell the creature to squeeze itself into the meat grinder then pushing the corpse themselves.

1. It could be that the humans were goblins (snatched as children), and there was some sort of loyalty screwup, or maybe they were seperate ambushes that encountered each other (different civs will reveal each other).
2. No idea, do humans send ambushes? Do you have more than one goblin civ?
3. No.

Thanks guys, I had heard of that happening with dwarves, but never with humans. That's interesting. It's not often that you get to arm your dwarves with humanite in a friendly manner. After checking up on their civilization apparently their general is a Human Administrator. Hopefully he's not planning on coming here anytime soon.

I'm saying that, if butchery must have a workshop (it really shouldn't, as most large animals were processed in the field to a large extent), then they should only do part of the corpse at a time.

So, I just routed a siege with only five spike traps hooked up to a repeating lever (it was indeed quite awesome). All of the gobbos were riding mounts (rats or olms). Some questions:

1. The dead war giant rats/olms can and will be butchered, right?
2. Does melting down equipment work in the latest version? (Just checkin')
3. Is it unsportsmanlike to refer to the sieges as "meals on wheels"?

1. No
2. Yes
3. Both unsporting and inaccurate

1. Not even if I give the order to butcher a dead animal on repeat the butcher's shop?
2. I designated some arrows for melting ages ago, what labour is needed to melt items?
3. Unsporting I'll give ya, but it IS accurate...

Okay, so I just tested it, and they DO butcher the dead war animals.

Interesting. I did not thing they did. To melt items, you need to use the "melt metal object" task at a smelter. This will melt the designated items.

Oh, that explains why they didn't melt those arrows I designated for it months ago. Thanks.

Now, another question. Will an item marked for dumping be taken to the nearest garbage dump zone, or a random one? Also, if you drop a skeleton from...say, ten z-levels, will it turn into bones?

1. Probably the closest, otherwise the NW-bottom-most dump.
2. No, you must wait for it to degrade. Butchering also works for non-sentients.

But I thought they didn't rot into piles of bones anymore...

They don't. They only way to use sentient bones is from severed limbs.

Partial skeletons aren't affected by falls, since they're treated as objects. I don't recall ever seeing a skeleton in DF, but I'd guess that they just fall like other objects. The only way to get bones from something normally non-butcherable is to separate bone-bearing body parts from the parts that become 'skeleton', and you can only do that while the creature is alive.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I distinctly remember having lots of goblin and elf bones in a fort?
