To make charcoal all you need is a wood furnace, a log, and a dwarf with wood burning (not furnace operating) enabled. I know this because I actually did it.
Problem is that I can't locate wood burning to turn on in the new version. Unless I just overlooked it.
Wood burning is a farming task now.
Ah, no wonder I couldn't find it. You'd think it'd be with the other furnace things, heh.

Main use is meant to be for making potash, for farming with. Not as a crutch to run a metal industry with.

What exactly do I need to do to ensure my dwarves are equipped before going into battle?

I set their weapons on the military menu, but they always go unarmed regardless. If they were already holding their weapon when I tell them to go attack something, they drop it and then go.

I've also had the problem that the dwarves just AREN'T grabbing gear.  I have an arsenal dwarf with his office and plenty of free time, I have practice swords ready for them to spar with, they're legendary fighters and strikers...but none of 'em are grabbing practice swords and skilling up.

Exactly. Even in worst-case scenarios where you have NO processed fuel and NO magma, all it takes is a single charcoal from a wood furnace to start up your metal industry, because every single map has bituminous coal by the truckload all over it.

It's actually slightly disappointing...

These are the kinds of bugs that make DF the game it is.  Magma vanishing?  Oops, it's all being sucked down by hell.
This is how everything works. This, right here, is DF.

The wiki apparently now has quite a good article which works for 2010. Maybe read it again. A few times  ;) then ask a more specific question.

Before the upgrade, Space was the default "Back to previous screen" button. Now it's Escape, which given how often we go up/down menus, sucks.

To put it back to Space, I used the keymap command.
My interface.txt now has:
[LEAVESCREEN:SPACE]
[LEAVESCREEN_ALL:SHIFT+SPACE]

(replaces whatever it used to say)

Problem:
In the "Manager" screen, when I try to type (eg) wooden door, as I press SPACE the menu level backs out.
What do I need to change here please?
I want to use space to go back through menus (ie, "instead of escape"), BUT I want to be able to use SPACE as a SPACE BAR when I type a string.
Edit: I already looked at every entry in interface.txt that mentions "manage"

Now that vermin remains don't rot... are we just hiding them or do we still dump them?  ;D

I sent my dwarf miners out to mine ramps.
I had two miners working at it.
One of them is now standing on top of where a ramp used to be that self-de-constructed when there was no longer any ramp around it. His icon is wierd because he is on the tile with a dog (I think his pet).

The tile is marked as "Open space" and the dwarf is just... levitating.

Known bug or do I report it?
Screen shot or whole save-file?

Was hoping not to save with him hanging in mid-air but will try that.

edit: hasn't worked, still floating on his pick.
damn, I need that pick too... much more than I need that dwarf!

Are wooden blocks bugged for anyone else? I can't use them for anything and dwarves won't carry them to bar/block stockpiles.

Reported bug re: stockpiles,

Quoting that bug report:

Related, stockpiles set to receive only stone or only stone and glass blocks don't work. You have to set the stockpile to also receive metal blocks before stone blocks will arrive.

I have become rather confused on the matter of nobles, as I recall that in the previous version, the monarch of your fortress would be the monarch of your civilisation, and yet the wiki states that all positions can be changed by the player. Could someone please enlighten me on the matter?
