Are you saying that saying that men getting into car crashes more often than women is discrimination?

Not the mere fact that it happens.  But when an individual is judged according to that statistic?  That's prima facie discrimination, although whether it's unjustified discrimination is of course up for debate.

It's possible I let anger get the best of me, but I still think it's a stupid bloody idea to debate whether or not fact that young men get into car crashes more often than women is discrimination. If it's a fact that it happens, that's like shouting out that someone's racist for pointing out another person comes from China.

Young men get into car crashes more often than young women. It is not part of some great scheme to discriminate against women, or something equally as ludicrous. Do you want women to get into car crashes more often to balance it out? It's PCness to a ridiculous level, but since it's Cowofdoom we're talking about here, I would expect no better.

Im not implying some evil conspiriacy. Nor do I want a balancing out of car crashes. What I do want however is that people be judged by their actions and not their gender. Is that so much to ask?

Where it's possible to do so, sure. But the bank doesn't really have the time, manpower or money to do a comprehensive character analysis over several years each time you want a loan.

Precisely. So yes, in this case it is so much to ask and even a little bit of thought would have led you to that conclusion.

Would it be discrimination if the banks didn't give out loans to poor people because statistically poor people are less likely to pay the bank back than rich people?

Yes. Again, in the naked definition of the world.

Or they could just not take peoples gender into account when they give out loans.

The thing is though, in this context the word carries alot more baggage than just it's base definition.

And maybe they could just not take people's solvency into account when they give out loans too.

Hell, why check anything, Banks should just throw money at people.

But statistical analysis, whether or not you think it's discriminatory, is important. It's just the way the world works. It's not all nice.

Personally, I don't care if it's discriminatory or not. If a person is, to the best of their knowledge, unable to pay them back, or far less likely too, then it is logical not to give out loans to them unless they're absolutely sure they can pay them back. Otherwise they'll probably lose money. That can't possibly cause anything major, could it? Oh goodness no.

This is exactly why banks do interviews, credit analysis, and where applicable background checks.  They do take a comprehensive character analysis over several years (via records anyway), at least for loans of large enough amount to take notice in.  You're not just automatically locked into a statistical few-dimensional box of gender/age/credit score.

Goddammit people, four different times I hit POST only to be jumped off.

Of course not, but they start with gender, age, credit score etc and build from there.

Cow seems to feel that they shouldn't even start there, they should just give people money.

Being a man or a woman isen't your resposibility. Paying your debts is.

How's that?

Woah you brought up the whole "dont give money to poor people" thing. My only argument is that they shouldnt check your gender.

Really, you've been here how long?  And you haven't figured this out?  What cow feels is whatever will keep an argument going.  Hell, I don't even know what you three are arguing about, I just know you're all making self-contradictory, specious arguments about comparing statistics to individuals, which has been very well established as a No No in the talking points.

Hell, why is there an argument here? We need to stop arguing with Cow altogether. Because here's how this always works.

Cow jumps into a thread to claim something ridiculous or, at the very least, odd.
People explain why Cow is wrong. Including me. Especially me. I don't like Cow.
Cow continues to repeat his main point, trying to pretend he's saying something different, then claims victory when people give up in disgust.

Really, if none of us even started with him, we could be disgusted much quicker and not have to be subjected to his drivel.

EDIT: Damn it Aqizzar.

When does responsibility enter the equation?

The bank doesn't give a damn about responsibility, all the bank cares about is how likely you are to pay the loan back. Responsibility never enters the equation, only reality. And the simple reality is that sex is a relevant factor for many statistics, including the liklihood of paying back a loan.

It's not nice, it's not pretty, but the universe doesn't give a damn about your proud little posturing. And neither does the bank, because no matter how often you repeat your opinion that banks shouldn't discriminate, the reality is they can, do, and must.
