I was gonna say, THIRTY FIVE YEARS of a hole that size burning... yea, that's got to be doing something. Why hasn't this been publicized?
Probably has. It's been going on for 35 years; ergo it's old news.

35 years is not very long.  There is a coal mine in China that has been burning for over a hundred years... but that is nothing compared to Burning Mountain in Australia which has burned for over 6,000 years.

Then you've got Centralia AKA Silent Hill, which has been burning for 48 years and is predicted to continue burning for at least another 250.
