Some Catholics believe in Transubstantiation, which is a fancy way of saying that the wafer/bread/cracker and wine/juice that they take at communion literally transforms into the blood and flesh of their savior upon consumption.

FTFY; even some Protestant creeds include transubstantiation.

And it doesn't mean literal transformation (because even Catholics have taste buds, you know). If I remember correctly, the whole concept is heavily influenced by Aristotelian (?) philosophy: A thing has a sort of true 'being' (there's a correct term for this which I don't remember), and that 'being' determines the thing's observable characteristics. Church doctrine is that during the words of institution the 'being' of bread and wine is transformed into the 'being' of Christ's blood and flesh, without changing the objects' outward appearance.
This, of course, is completely contrary to the original philosophy, but nobody's ever claimed Church doctrine made sense or even was consistent.

Heh, at least in the German Protestants' creed they theoretically still affirm the 'holy Catholic and Apostolic Church'. But since Catholic is usually taken to mean Roman-Catholic around here, they mostly changed it to 'Christian' or somesuch.
