Walls on constructed floors
« on: January 25, 2010, 04:37:49 pm »

Is it possible to mod so I can build constructed walls on constructed floors? Seems kind of silly that it's not possible.

Nope, that is hardcoded because the game will not allow two constructions to exist on the same square.

Deconstruct the floor and then construct the wall where it was.

Deconstruct the floor and construct a wall instead.

There's really no difference.

Yeah, I know that, but it shouldn't be to hard to code so the wall overwrites the floor if it's built over.

Well, at last we have an expert coder on our hands. Thank you for your advice.

If it were easy and quick, it would be done by now. The game cannot currently have two constructions existing in the same tile, deal.

I'm by no means an expert, but it kind of does the same thing when you build a stair over a dug out staircase. Now I realise those two have different tags, but shouldn't it be possible to just alter the constructed floors tag?

That is the point. Dug out stairs are not constructions. I'm sure at some point it will become possible to have multiple constructions in a single tile, but for now it is not, nor is it possible to mod this behavior.

Natural floors and constructed floors behave differently on purpose, one is natural stone and one is a construction. If you're suggesting that building a wall over a constructed floor make the floor into natural stone, I doubt that will ever happen. He will get to changing that when he feels the need, I hope he does it at some point but I'd prefer other much more important things be handled first.

Like burrows.

Actually two construction can exist (and do) on same square. But not floors+ walls. For example floors+doors, floors+gears ,etc So code wise there is almost no difficulty adding that.

Doors, gears, etc are not constructions, they are buildings.

They're not. Constructions determine the nature of a tile - whether it can be pathed to or not. A building is an object that can occupy a floor tile.

(b)uild -> (C)onstructions
Gears and doors are under a different subset of the build menu.

Constructions can't have their status viewed or be affected by temperature like buildings can.

Also, no type of building or construction has anything to do with the raws at this point in time, except for materials. So no, this is an out-and-out impossible mod. An external utility, on the other hand... I don't know. It would probably be possible to get it to turn a construction into a natural tile.

Code wise they are the same.

Oh? They're the same code-wise?

Are you also an expert on toady's code? Please enlighten me, because I thought they were different.

Really, why make statements like this when you have no idea what you're talking about?
