I had the misfortune of spawning in a wonderful custom-genned binary system - whose 2nd star orbits at 1.5 trillion km out with its own planets and 2 LPs - connecting to an absolutely massive system with 6 jump points. My system is alright but to get through my connecting system was an impossibility with my starting ships. I've had to refit my jump sentry cruisers and even my scout-survey vessels 3 times, while maintaining 2 fuel transports in the process.

It seems my insistence on my survey vessels being 5kt geo-grav jump-capable vessels and my first warships being 10kt laser cruisers is completely useless in this current playthrough.

The only upside is, any invading enemies will also take a ridiculous amount of fuel to ever reach me... I'm considering starting over in a less secure, more FUN location.

That settles it - I just regenned a new game. This time I'll RP as a fungal race (Ach'remoc Dominion) suited for high-temp worlds.

I wonder, has anyone ever played a game as space Dwarves? I'd love to see an RP/LP of DF in space. ;)

Describe 'space dwarf' and I might do just that.

I have several times, its pretty fun.  I contemplated making a race theme for them but I'd have to come up with the files then get in contact with steve which would be a hassle.

Probably my coolest one was the fortress of rothgeshud, of several hundred million dwarves, that eventually expanded into space.  Plasma carronade bases make fun magma cannon analogs.

e:  I'm pretty sure this is from that fort;

Kamikazi class? Is that the spacegobs, or was it a defeated migrant wave?

Space gobs, they came a-seiging, destroyed my military, then broke themselves against my orbital defenses, eventually routing.

They then periodically returned and launched missiles before heading back to re-arm until I managed to launch a new wave of fast laser ships.  The harassment forces were allowed to launch one more wave of missiles, and were then chased down and destroyed.  I then found my way to their homeworld.

Pictured is my trapped fast laser ships, which were escourting a jump gate constructor before failing in their mission spectacularly.  They managed to survive several years in the alien system until another gate ship and fleet was constructed and sent to relieve them.  During that time they massacred most the systems defenders, including over a hundred 'kamikaze' class.

The game actually got a fatal save corruption shortly after their homeworld surrendered under massive nuclear bombardment.

e:  Fun fact, the game automatically chose the name kamikaze.  That is part of why I thought that moment was screenshot worthy.

Alright, I have a problem. I send my fleet through a jump gate, and they encounter hostile aliens. They go through with sensors active and all missiles and fire controls assigned. The sensors on my fleet easily pick up both the hostile ships and their missiles. The two ships proceed to slaughter my entire fleet because the missile tubes refused to fire, as they were "not ready". When I used the "Msl Launch" button on a cruiser in the hope that the thermal-sensor equipped missiles would manage to hit something, that ship flushed it's tubes (although the missiles headed in the opposite direction of the hostile ships, and ran out of fuel without hitting anything), so I know it's not a reload issue. What am I doing wrong?

Edit: This combat lasted for around three minutes, and I had the same issue when I copied the game directory and attacked my Sol NPR.

Going through a JP all sensors and FCs are scrambled and unusable for a time.  This can be greatly reduced with a squad jump.  Can also use a squad jump to land further away from a JP to avoid camps.

Well-trained/high morale ships will also suffer shorter scramble times.

Also, the Msl Launch may be more reliable if you fired missiles at a waypoint in the bearing of the enemy contacts: just place a waypoint there, set your target and try to fire.
Albeit i'm not sure if it'll fail to work anyway, jump scrambling's a bitch. I suggest setting up some ships to defend the other side of the gate so you can stop enemies from coming through.
