Nothing wrong with 120000 ton freighters, but don't expect a speedy delivery heh. In my last game I have been using a few big freighters and rely on the civilian lines for fast good transfers. It cut down on micromanagement a lot.

is there any advantage to using 12cm or 15 cm lasers over 10's? does the better damage destroy more missiles in a salvo or does it remain at 1 missile per laser per tick?

From what I understand, you should probably only need 10 cm for missiles.  You would want higher caliber lasers for fighting ships.  Having a smaller size laser would allow you to have it engage faster targets.  No idea about how many per tick thou.

Is there any sort of advantage to having multiple companies?

I'm pretty sure each laser can only hit one target.

Larger lasers are more effective as point defence against Invader Torpedoes which are armoured however. They also have a larger range, which may allow you to get off two shots if the incoming missiles are slow and you have decent capacitor tech. In general however massed gauss cannons are the best beam point defence against missiles.

Is there any sort of advantage to having multiple companies?

For boarding actions? Yes, greater numbers of boarders/defenders increase the speed at which you will manage to conduct a boarding action/defence with a better chance of success.

Should i start researching gauss then because i only have base tech for them, or should i just use quad 10cm laser turrets as PD? My fleet just got massacred and I'm going to do a revamp.

How many seconds does it take for your laser turrets to recharge? Because gauss guns fire every 5 seconds no matter what your capacitor tech.

Just research the fire rate and perhaps one level of the velocity tech. At fire rate 2 50% size gauss cannons are the same size and should be shooting down as many missiles as your lasers, at higher firerates they should shoot down considerably more.

It is probably a good idea, as that is what your CIWS uses.
I meant company as in more of the civlian companies.  Even thou that does answer another of my questions.  And would it be a good idea to put marines on all of my major ships, or would that tonnage be better devoted to something else?

My capacitor tech is at 6 so pretty quick but i still think I'll make the switch to gauss rather quickly. It will be a while before I'm combat ready again so i have time.

gauss cannons can't be turreted correct? so I should mount them on fast ships to have a higher TS?

Ah you mean civilian shipping lines not companies. :P More shipping lines generally just means more ships. It only becomes an issue if you only have very limited trade opportunities avilable as it can then cause the shipping lines to be starved of cash to build new ships.

Placing Marines onboard your ships is more of a flavor thing at the moment as I don't believe NPR's will currently attempt boarding actions. It's primarily useful if you are doing a multifaction game or if you intend to be launching boarding actions of your own.

No, they can. A quad gauss turret with a high fire rate makes an excellent PD gun.

No that is railguns, which fire a fixed 4 shots, but also require power. Gauss cannons can be turreted freely.

Of course you probably want to use reduced size gauss cannons in your quad turrets, unless you enjoy turrets over 2500 tons in size each.

With the destruction of my fleet I have revised my ship tactics after seeing what worked well and what didnt against this NPR. My new standard ship speed is 10000 km/s thick armor to deal with successive missile hits and PD on every ship. I've moved from most of my ships being around 10k tonnes to build 3 battleships around 30k tonnes. I think I;m going to compliment them with a LOT of corvettetes- like 8 corvettes per battleship

Here is my prototype battleship design( I don't have my gauss tech researched yet so I don't have any gauss turrets on. I'm thinking around 3k tonnes of gauss to bring me around 35000 tonnes and I am days away from new reactors so I don't have those on there)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

and the corvette with the same issues:

Is my maint. time ok?

should I wait to research the next level of engine before i retool for this?

any other qualms/ stuff I forgot? My other designs were completely shredded against 40k km/s missiles and I don't want the to happen again!
