I love reading this thread because you learn so much from just general banter.

Also, the prospect of combat is so daunting to me. I can barely build a manageable ship much less organize them. any tips for this?

The only suggestion is to fail.  You're in Bay12, you know how Dwarf works.  You go and get yourself killed.  Then you try again, and you die slightly less.

I actually didn't fail that much in dwarf. only one time to a necromancer when i didn't know what they were and i didnt know how to play.

where do i organize formations? TG tab? and how do i move fleets to a point that might not be clost to and where but i want them a specific distance away from something?

For the former, yes, the TG window (largely). For the latter, waypoints, which can be placed via the tab in the system view window.

You can also use the follow command rather than the "go to command".

And you can set up perimeters/formations with the "Protected Threat Axis" orders section, which is something I'm just now learning to use after all this time. Pretty nifty.

How does that work?

Here's the orders for the 1st Viper Squadron from our Battlestar Artemis game. So it sends them 2 kilometers directly to starboard of the Artemis, and then maintains that position and matches speed. If the Artemis were to suddenly change course, it would have them change their positioning appropriately to maintain that starboard position and distance.

It's a bit more flexible and useful than the generic "escort" function, which puts ship at 60,000km (which is really only good for gauss anti-missile coverage). In theory, you could have a pack of ships, all with different position vectors from one ship, and then easily move the entire formation by moving that main ship. In a game with stealth ships and "mines", this would be crucial to set up a picket of destroyers and sensor boats around your capital ships.

If only you could link the orders to figther squadrons or escort or something, you could deploy a whole battle formations from the clikc of a button.

Ask Steve for it. He'd probably like the idea, especially for the use as suggested.

I got back to the game after some time, and I got some questions, ones that I had in my head for a long time.

What is a hyper drive/limit, how do I use it?

Particle Beam says something about torpedos. What torpedos? How do I make them and launch them? They can't be the regular missiles, right?

Hyperdrive is broken in the current version, so I've heard, so it doesn't work at all.

Previously, hyperdrive would create a larger engine that could move at something like 10x speed for no extra fuel cost, when outside a certain radius from a star, making hyperdrive the sort of "scientifically polite inter-solar drive" and also very nice for catching comets and reaching binary stars.  Fighters with hyperdrive were OP due to the fact that you could exceed the speed of light.

Strictly speaking, "torpedoes" refers to the missiles used by the Invaders, but more broadly you can design a missile in ANY way you like, so you can just figure it out from there.  It's probably just referring to missiles though, or specifically "slower moving missiles".

You can.  On the bottom of TG screen are the buttons 'Save Escorts', 'Recall escorts' and 'Deploy escorts'.  Save does what it name means it saves the current setting for that fleet's escorts, recall orders them into the escorted TG and deploy sends them pack out on the same orders they had before.

So a Particle Beam is a kind of a 'launcher' for the torpedoes? A 'laser pointer' that let's them stay locked on a ship?

No, they're just another type of beam weapon from the last version, and I doubt that Steve has completely changed them for 6.0. You're probably confusing them with plasma torpedoes, which is a completely different weapon that you should hope you'll never see.
