It wouldn't be so much breathing water as breathing oxygenated, nutrient-rich goop (made out of your mother).

What tipped you off?  :P

Of course, you wouldn't want something as poorly thought out as the plugs. More like a smartfoam case that seals around your body with nutrient goop in every bit of empty space, with a small cavity so it can reach your face.

Steve has posted the changed crew requiremnts for components here. Most are dropped by 50% to 75%.

Also jump engines are now much cheaper, as well as research costs for jump efficiency techs being effectively halved.

The smaller crew requirements is certainly uplifting.  More difficult crew but less of them, here's hoping it balances nicely!

Thank god Steve for making jump engines easier to get!  I always use all my starting tech points on jump research (and minimal engines and sensors), I hate waiting around to start exploring the universe!

And since most NPRs and other "space hazards" are only generated upon system discovery, I only make the game harder for myself by dumping all my starting tech points into exploring quicker instead of, say, weapons and armor.

The answer to this thread is Peter Watts.

Huh. That was a pretty damn good read. Thanks for the link!

Only in Aurora will you discover a col cost 0 world 1 jump away from Sol, a race of frigid (but otherwise friendly) Nazi Gazelle in another, and find absolutely nothing wrong with either.

To be fair, a JP in Sol could theoretically lead to a system on the other side of the galaxy.

True. Real distance doesn't matter so much in this or similar games.

I am still not going back to play until 5.7 (6.0?) come out. Cant wait for newtonian aurora, but when next patch comes steve will have most of NA mechanics coded and "only" need to rewrite AI. Then there is nothing more to wait than aurora2, which finally load database into memory rather than reading from hd every time (like thousands time faster access to data).

We should make Dwarf Fortress/Bay12games themes for this game.  Especially since googling "Aurora game" gets this thread instead of the actual website...

Unless you have Real Stars turned on. Seems to be a maximum limit of about 10-15 LY per jump link. If I felt like it, I could sit down with my ~100 star game (which I've kept careful astrography notes on) and calc out the median, mean and extrema for jump point links.

True. But thing with that setting is that it isn't making it more likely for a given connection to be between relatively close stars as an inherent feature of the JP network, but because the galaxy as such is composed entirely of stars which are relatively near to Sol. If we could catalogue every star in the Milky Way and manage to run a Real Stars game with all of them with some hypothetical supercomputer, you wouldn't (AFAIK) see a preference for connections between systems which are physically near to one another.

Not sure if I follow you. Every star in the Real Stars database has its RL galactic coords stored in the database, and the game seems to follow rules about only choosing stars within a maximum range of the current star. I've plotted out the jumpweb from my game into a 3D starmap, and although a bit chaotic, the "branches" tend to stay in roughly the same quadrant of sky. I actually named regions of the map based on what constellation the star is in, because it does tend to clump up based on physical location (most, if not all, the stars in Centaurus can be placed near each other on my Aurora map without lots of overlapping jumplines).

I'll have to dig up one of my 3D maps at home to illustrate what I'm talking about.  :-\

Example: You'll never get a jumproute from Sirius (-8.08  2.47  -1.61) to Altair (14.67  -2.59  7.7) , because they're in totally opposite directions and about (if I did the math right) 25.1 LY apart.
