Really *good* salvage.  He might actually get the compressed fuel tanks and plasma torpedoes.

I prefer armored fuel tanks for my warships, but I like compressed for commercial designs (esp. civvies).

Plasma torps and those triple-strength (IIRC) shields are why you want to kill invaders.  The shields are a bit of a pain, though, since the minimum size is 10 and they don't stack.  So if you want different amounts of shielding for different ships, you have to research separate shields.

RE torpedoes:  Does auto-fire know how to use them yet?  As of 5.2x they were never assigned to your MFCs, and since auto-fire always reassigns your weapons (to precisely one fire control, I should add, and I don't know if a mixed guns-n-missiles ship works with auto-fire either) it'll never use them.

People actually use auto-fire?  I could never get it to operate to my satisfaction.

I don't know... there is a lot of things I wish I could automate in this game...

But apperantly unlike Simcity I am not just any mayor... I am SUPER MAYOR OF THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE!!! and can obvious micromanage everything including the single grains of sand on the beach.

And have a personnel intergalactic transporter that can transfer any officer anywhere in the known universe in the blink of an eye. Unless they're an espionage team.(??)

And combat AI leaves a great deal to be desired. Enemy fleets pretty much just target the closest object. Used three fighter squadrons to great effect this way, luring an enemy group into missile range of my massed missile frigates, then luring them away if the return fire was too intense. Also, once I figured out the range of their anti-missile missiles (usually the most dangerous weapon the enemy has IMHO), I could use my scout fighters to get them to fire a massive volley, then outrun the salvo's max range.

Still, I've been playing it pretty solid for a couple of months now, so it's obviously still fun. The exploration and design aspects are appealing.

*shakes head* - I've still got 7 alien wrecks left to salvage, let alone any of my own ships.

We're looking currently looking at:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's nearly 750,000 tons of salvage, not even counting the multiple thousands of pure RPs my salvagers will be dropping off. It's nuts.

Wow. Well, I doubt you'll be suffering losses like that ever again with the kind of tech you've looted off of them.

I'm not sure you're allowed to complain about salvage like that.

I wonder if it is possible to have like a super fleet flying around, mining asteroids and terraforming planets on the run.

Maybe. If they wandered around stripmining everything and making everything uninhabitable and bringing all the metal back to the home system.
Edit: What the best weapon? I been using railguns mostly.

What the best weapon? I been using railguns mostly.

There is no best weapon, though lasers seem to be the most popular.

Missiles are the most versatile and the most powerful, but they're very expensive.

Particle beams can have great range for very a relatively low weight and cost, so long as you improve the range tech.  They also deal full damage at max range, unlike all other beam weapons.

Plasma carronades are only good very early on, since they start with a higher damage than the other beam types (more bang for the research cost).  Beyond that, they have terrible range and fire slowly.  Their penetration is also as horrible as missiles.

Railguns have the best damage output and are reasonable for anti-missile work.

Lasers have high range, decent damage, and great penetration.

Gauss cannons have terrible range but their high ROF makes them fantastic anti-missile weapons.  High-ROF gauss can shred ships, too.  If you use beam fighters, gauss cannons are a good choice despite the accuracy penalty (since only small ones will fit on most fighters).

High-Powered Microwave has less range than a laser and deals a single point of damage.  However, it deals 3 damage to shields (yay?) and ignores armor.  It only damages electronic systems, so they're best used to cripple ships for your other warships and/or boarding parties.

Meson cannons have the same range as microwave IIRC, deal a single point of damage, but ignore shields and armor.  In large numbers, they're wicked.  These are another great choice for beam fighters.

So, yeah...  It depends on what tech is available (from salvage or whatever) and what your needs are.  If you can afford missiles, they're fantastic.  I'd save 'em for your main battle fleet(s), your homeworld, and emergencies.  If your enemy is heavily shielded and armored, railguns and mesons are great options.  If they have light-to-moderate armor, high-caliber lasers can punch right through it.  If your ships are faster, feel free to plink away with particle beams at long range.  If you plan to capture enemy ships with marines, use microwaves after tearing down their shields with something stronger.  And so forth.

Take my suggestions with a grain of salt, though, as I'm a terrible player.  :P

I guess I'll go with missiles and railguns for these pesky ships with alot of armor and shields.

Arn't missles made in the same builder (sort of) as the ship builder?

So you could make giant missles?
