No worries, although many of these jokes will live on in the next version, I would bet at least some will not make any sense in the new version, and so will be lost to the depths of time. Other, new jokes to wear down will evolve as we find the awesome new quirks in the next version.

OK, I've posted here without any real feedback, so here's mine:

1) Elves are cool because they are here. They are alien enough to be hated and they are useful enough to be likeable (mostly for bringing animals and sparring (wooden) weapons).

2) If you think your elves are not something that you like, there's a /raw/objects/ folder. If you're too lazy to fix it for yourself, don't blame Toady's design. That's what I do if I like something my way.

Here's what I think of elves:

What's good about them is that they can potentially bring training weapons and exotic animals for trade.

What's bad about them is that they don't bring training weapons and exotic animals for trade. That and the rest of what they do is that they bring too many cloth bins, won't accept any wooden items, and try to limit my tree cutting.

DF being in the state that it is, I can pour copious amounts of magma on even minor annoyances with few, if any, consequences. Therefore, elves along with bothersome nobles, carp, goblins, etc. are all things I act like I "hate" for the fun of it.

It is of my opinion that elves are really awesome and a superior race.  They are cool, awesome, and perhaps even better than dwarves.


The only type of elf that is bad is the evil surface-dwelling faint elves, their skin bleached white from the horrible sun orb, after their exile from the underground.

Oh, and "dark" elves is a misnomer.  It implies that they are not the true "elf", and that the faint elf is the norm from which all other elves descend.  This is blasphemy, and must be punished by liberal application of GCS.

I actually have never understood fully why elves are so hated, or why they are considered "hippies". I mean, these elves eat their enemies and sing to trees for wooden weapons (which I believe is why they bring so few of them). Admittedly, they don't bring an many exotic animals as we might like, but I actually find that the cloth makes an excellent trade good for humans and dwarves, and even more so when they request it. I usually have 20+ bins of cloth sitting in my depot waiting to be traded. Additionally, I perfer to keep my dwarves well-clothed.

I always had the image of a noble, yet alien race of beings who don't really understand dwarves and humans and subsequently end up killing them as often as not.

elf hate is most likely a backlash against the ever common stereotype of elves as being better at everything than everyone and acting like it. Its a side effect of decades of LotR and D&D fanboi elf worship.

1. Aliens are awesome. However, elves aren't aliens. They are a menace to the treecutting traditions required to keep multiple forges running round the clock; forges which are ideally put to use building pump parts for bathing elves in magma. In short, they are a threat to our very way of life. Oh... And real dwarves spar with a minimum material quality of steel.

2. We don't blame Toady's design. We blame the elves. However, as stated previously, we do occasionally edit the raws to make them more tolerable. Or to be more more specific, increasing their homeotherm to 20,000 or decreasing their ignition point to room temperature.
