Well really its them who started it.  Their diplomats repeatedly fire insults, after disrespect, after veiled short joke at us every year. 

I guess I can see why they want to protect the trees if it's some bull-hockey about their religion, and they probably are making a sacrifice morally to allow us to chop as much as they do, but when they insult us every visit and then try to be diplomatic it tends to sour relations.

Racism would be hating them for being elves, but I think we only hate them because they get angry at our trade proposals, insult our dwarves, and try to meddle in our wood cutting operations - a challenge against our sovereignty!

If they didn't do those things, no one would hate them.

I just gave myself my lovely "Hammered Elf Sympathizer" title.  Haha.  Yes I know the Elf-hate is just a very, very long-running forum joke that many people must enjoy for it to have lasted so long.  The only thing I've never been able to grasp is why they're called hippies, when they tend to start more wars (in my worldgens at least) than any other race.  Even the goblins tend to be less violent than the elves in my worlds.

I quite like the elves.  They're not your typical badly-ripped-from-Tolkein-blondies that you find in an unfortunate number of fantasy pieces.  They've got a bit more culture than "hangs around and sings in trees."  Sure that leads to them being annoying when they reach your trade depot, but I prefer it that way.  What's the Fun in having every other race be perfect gentlemen and loving you from first sight?

It is obvious you do not have adequate experience with elves. Because of an elven conspiracy with orcs and goblins, one of my forts went from a population of 120 to a population of 5. They are trojan horses in disguise, just waiting for an opportunity to hatch an evil plan to destroy you.

 Hey, you do have to give credit where credit is due, at least.  They may be self-righteous hypocrites ("How dare you touch a single plant!  We're going to slaughter you now with our wooden weapons!  Oh, but first, can we interest you in buying five metric tonnes cloth made from plant fiber?"), but Elves are also capable of being completely invisible while riding a unicorn.  I dare you to find a Dwarf that good at the art of stealth.

 What a terrifying prospect that is, actually: the ninja skills of an Elf combined with the ultimate destructive force that is a berserk Dwarf in the midst of a martial trance.  Batman would be afraid of that Dwarf.  Certainly Bat Men would be.
