Because it isn't so simple even if it was in your better interest because you effectively have to ignore the fact that you are deluding yourself whist not forgetting.

That is why it is much easier for others to apply placebo onto you. You only need to trust them or the process.

Note: Responding to even earlier post, not the last one.

wouldn't it be because if it's a placebo then it by definition has no effect and thus it wont cure you?  Just sayin'  ::)

Basically the placebo itself doesn't cure you. It is believing it will cure you that does it.

I don't know many doctors that scoff at the power of the mind and its importance to recovery or even death.

I think the placebo effect works more with the subconscious than anything else, and if you get the feeling that it might be a placebo effect then it might not work despite how much you want it to help you.
The point is not about WANTING it to help you, but thinking it will regardless.

Because it isn't so simple even if it was in your better interest because you effectively have to ignore the fact that you are deluding yourself whist not forgetting.
Well you dont have to ignore the fact that you know its a placebo, you just have to remember that it will in fact cure your ailment.

Its really simple, but hard to explain. The placebo itself isent the placebo.

No it doesn't. Otherwise we would have a Faith Healing Televangelist Complex instead of a Big Pharma Complex.

I dont think you know many doctors, or else you wouldn't be seriously arguing what you are arguing. That being said, it is one thing to be concerned about the psychological state of a patient (which is important, and can affect recovery) and jumping onto the faith healing bandwagon

No, it does work. It just doesn't work like magic, nor does it work the majority of the time even in the deepest faith-based communities depending on the ailment. It is unreliable. Plus it doesn't replace medicine anyhow, in fact it works best in conjuction with actual medicine, so even if you were going for placebo healing you would do so combined with actual healing.

Though there is something to be said about people losing faith in their recovery or life and then dying because of it.

There is some romantic notion attached to this, hense the old phrase: "Died of a broken heart" which actually was fully believed at one point.

Lots of people died of uncurable diseases in the past.

Sugar could have saved them, even though there was no known cure.

So it is in fact a real cure. Its universal elixer that can cure everything when you think about it. Even things we arent able to cure with modern advancements.

No your just underestimating it.

I mean if someone in the past got a illness that wasent yet cured, another could have gave him sugar and it could have cured them.

Well if it was considered incurable at the time.

If they gave the guy a placebo and said it was the cure, then it would have cured him.

Thats not what Im saying. This isent an argument over the definition of what is incurable.

Im saying if there was no cure at the time then the placebo would have cured him.
And of course as we all know the placebo isent a cure at all.

ANNOYING PICTURE

No because then the incurable would be curable which would prevent it from being incurable.
