I'm not sure how you use the placebo effect on yourself. If you KNOW it's a placebo, that sort of defeats the purpose doesn't it?

I suppose it has to do with how suggestible you are. I'm not suggestible at all, I don't think I'd be able to be hypnotized, and I don't think I could placebo myself knowing it was a placebo.

It IS truly bizarre how powerful the effect can be. I can't imagine what the evolutionary reasons for it are.

Self-Application of a placebo is just as easy as lying to yourself. Apply the lie, and make it truth.

That's probably the simplest way I can put that. Of course, it would have to be within the realm of believability, otherwise, you won't fall for your own lie.
