There are cells that do not suffer from programmed cell death. The cells are called cancer, good luck finding immortality when cancerous growths start cutting off the blood supply to important organs.

There is some reasoning that being able to extend the telomer section of our genes could dramatically extend our lives with few side effects if any.

As for the cell death thing, it is possible to affect biological function without starting from scratch. In theory it should be possible to suppress the cell death function with a drug of some sort, of course then you get uncontrolled cell growth, also known as cancer.

There are plenty of layers to the problem, but the science moves forward in leaps and bounds, i would expect to see technology that increases the 'natural' life span of humans by a significant amount before i die, and possibly even technical immortality.


Of course, whether or not the mind is capable of dealing with centuries of life is another question entirely.

We don't actually know. Many of the current effects of aging can be put down to cellular deterioration in the brain. Can all of them? No clue, we won't find out until we get someone to 100 years old without aging him to 100 years old.

There's no way to tell. Certainly at the very least you'd either have some odd memory issues or require a larger skull.
