Humans are at the top of the food chain, and we feel the need to assert that every so often by consuming the helpless offspring of an only slightly-less-helpless creature in a disgusting manner.
It's like why we drink cups of poison, or willingly give our children infectious diseases.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Because people need to eat, and ancient methods of preservation were weird like that

Chicken pox parties, or whatever they were called. Basically vaccinations for poor people.

Who the fuck wants to produce a chicken pox vaccine when people can be immune without paying for it? There's no money in that.

Yes. Duck is delicious. As is lamb. Beef slightly less so. Then every other meat here.

It's kinda the opposite of a vaccination, since the kids still get the disease. The whole point of the "parties" is so the parents can try to get their kids sick at a more convenient, less disruptive time - during summer vacation instead of during school, for instance.

And then there are the (less than reputable) stories of people stinging their kids with scorpions to develop immunities.

I've just been depressed today, and I don't know why.
Also some asshat nearly ran me over with their truck in the parking lot, but meh, I was depressed before that.
This describes a day in my life last year.  I swear, five people decided to try and run be over in one day and I was already feeling depressed about my life.

Don't give up on the cat. I know some people who just found their cat after it was missing for longer than that.

Yeah :( Hopefully he is wandering about, but he's kinda old. He's kind of the 'helper cat' to my other cat who is a bit 'special' and semi-feral. When he's not around she won't come near and just hides under the cabinet until I leave her a bowl of food. I've been wandering around town looking and ventured into local vets etc. Nothing so far. There's been some construction work nearby so I'm wondering if it spooked him. Or maybe he became "demolitioned" o_o but hopefullynot

Mostly worried because he has not many teeth any more, so I don't think he could catch mice to sustain himself. Maybe he can find other cat's food to eat, idk. Just so strange that he would disappear. Maybe locked in a shed or something. But after 5 days... :X
