Just helped delivering a calf.

It was so big, it died soon after the process started. It was so big, it would have suffocated itself coming out, even had it not died in the cow. It was also so big, that on the way out, even though it was dead, it crippled the mother, who now can barely use one back leg, and the other not at all.

This is what centuries of breeding for size does.

That's pretty bad. Does that mean the mother has to go to the slaughterhouse (since I assume she can't walk)? Especially bad if she's a milk cow.

Beef cow. Probably wouldn't have happened to a milk cow.

She was lying on her side, on the ground. The only options open are to tip her over every day, twice, or she would die. The other option was to tip her once and prop her up against a tractor driven in behind her, which we did. This will only last until she inevitably tries to get up again.

There is a slim, very slim because of the size of the calf, which was huge, chance that it might get better. That's almost certainly not going to happen, but there is a chance.

So, we either wait for her to die (It will probably be found one morning on its back, dead) or call the vet in to bleed it. Not sure which it will be, but I hope not the bleeding, personally.
