Actually going by the Heritage group, Canada has a much higher degree of fiscal freedom (Click the fourth tab) indicating lower taxes overall. Although where that tax is distributed is variable, it could very well be that business aren't paying their share.

All a country has to do is spend less than 18% of its budget on military and 7% on interest and it can afford to spend more elsewhere.

EDIT: 4% on veterans' benefits is sort of a military expense because a smaller military today would result in fewer veterans in the future. So you could argue that 22% of the US federal budget is military.

I'm currently in emotional limbo and can't decide if I should rage or get sad or just continue to wtf. I'm a chef and work trough agency, basically rent-a-slave, and agreed to do short shift at local market cutting fish and meat and so on today. When it was time to close we finished cleaning quickly and I made the mistake of asking if there was anything else I could help with, and ended up shelving nothing but diapers and tampons for the last half an hour. I was probably most expensive shelver they have ever hired...
