Don't worry about it Grizzly, this place have a tendency of being really hypersensitive and people here are good blowing things way out of proportions if they get the chance.

To me it was the first remark and the "Assuming something about it was horrifying" which sounds creepy. Comes off as like "Death is cool but I guess you thought it was bad?" statements.

I'll show you blowing out of proportion. Prepare for a 50 page flamewar the likes of which mortal minds can scarcely comprehend! I'll bring popcorn for everyone, and we can sell tickets.

Seriously, though, we're not that bad. We do have a tendency to call people on things regardless of the general social trend toward calling people on those things. Comes across as oversensitive, maybe, but probably has more to do with the degree to which people want those social trends to change, given how many have gotten the short end of the relevant metaphorical stick. Most people 'round here are chill enough to go, "Oh, hey, I hadn't considered that my words would be interpreted this way, my bad. Here's my intent, which doesn't necessarily mean I'm blameless, but at least should help indicate that it was an error on my part, not malice." And then most other people are chill enough to go, "Hey, no problem, let's keep on amplifying our relaxed states."

And then we all get a nice little opportunity to contemplate the relative importances of what we say and what people hear, and how it's important to consider both when trying to figure out how to behave in a social context.

In this post, I do exactly what I'm responding to. WILL THE META NEVER CEASE?

Maybe that should've gone at the beginning. Still, what I wrote is all true - the important question, I suppose, is whether you think it needed to be said or not. Personally, I think that in a forum, it's okay to take some time to say things that might not need enunciation in a faster format. Point being, what you say is hypersensitivity and blowing things out of proportion, I say is a decision not to stay silent. Of course, in this case, I'm making that choice over a very small irritation, for reasons that are dubious at best, but most of the time people have more legitimate reasons than not wanting to sleep just yet, and more significant causes for distress.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Ah yep, put that in because assuming that he was 'horrified' might have come off as patronizing & offensive- projecting weakness or something.

@Lysabild
I know right? The jerks.

All of this is, again though, assuming that the guy wasn't dealing with it perfectly fine on his own.
To be perfectly honest here, what bothered me most about that train thing is that this guy chose the train I was going to use. It's kinda stupid to emotionally invest in someone just because he killed himself, only to immediately be sad, because, well, he killed himself. People suicide all the time and I'm not sad, so why should I be sad now? The only difference here is immediate physical adjacency, which is not the kind of thing people should base their emotional connections on. Social interaction is what counts.

That's just being human, bro. We get invested in things we can see, statistics don't work for us.

That said, do you -really- want to become someone who can shrug off a death that easily? Even if you don't know the guy?

I would say not in real life occurrences, but I think you can't emotionally feel for every disaster or death shown on the news as it would be far too much to cope with. You have to care for others, but don't forget to care for yourself as well.

Reading this thread reminds me how much others are likely to see me as an awfully messed up person. I don't see myself that way, of course. But the train thing just makes me wish we were willing to offer people a way to commit suicide safely and cleanly (by safely I am referring to the chance of the suicide making things worse than dying would have), and the anencephaly thing just makes me think of the possible benefits from being able to consistently trigger it during development, at will, for medical and scientific purposes. (Note that I can still understand how terrible it would be for a mother who was expecting a child, I'm talking about under a controlled setting)

:/

I guess it's at least nice to have a place, here, where I can say stuff like this without worrying too much about it. I know I'd never state such opinions in the physical world.

I'm all for it too, good sir. People and generally society tend to be too judgmental and sometimes even hypocritical about these things and saying such would result in us or anyone else being branded.

As much as I would like to agree with you on this IN GENERAL (not for anencephaly but maybe something more less serious), it's highly unlikely stuff like this will every happen. Forgive me for using such a word but stuff like this still a taboo in our current society.

-snip-
Nobody's messed up in any way or form. Its just that somehow, judgement has crept into the mentality of the general masses - regarding and labeling many essences of humanity any which way. Emotion; sadness, reflects what is troubling the person. While it is hard to communicate through the net - text and all, it can easily be understood through the process of communication.

In real life, we've got body language. Which can be messed with due to many barriers (cultural/local among most and stuff)

...Actually, reading through this thread gives me hope rather than see the wrongs in humanity. Hope that the people who've experienced even the worst (or think of themselves as the worst), still continue in the fight despite what they've seen or been through. People just tend to classify things as A, B or anything else that would give definition to them, and then the synonyms mess it up -- mostly through exaggeration. But that's just me and my experiences. :/

@Sad: about anencephaly? I'm going to study that; that, and most other things which would delve into the scenarios of life and death. Pretty much afraid of the future. :S

You do that.

But like, I only get gooey over twinky little skinny white guys.

._.

And I mean... I'm personally alright with that? I don't really feel one way or another about people based off their ethnicity.

It's just kind of awkward when it comes up, since people seem to think not wanting to be with someone of a different race makes you racist in all things. When like, if I saw a black guy (for ex.) that I wanted to date? I'd be all for it.

Just haven't gotten that.

That's what made me sad today. ._.
