I just found out one of my friends on Steam who I thought I was fairly close to, died in August. And I'd forgotten about him...

I feel really shitty about that.

He was only a teenager, too, like 15 ish? Died in his sleep, apparently.

You did nothing wrong, and there are far worse ways to go (pretty much all of them really).  I doubt most people could even name everyone they've ever been close to.

I remember a short story I read once that had a similar premise (in regards to computers being in charge, sorta).

Basically, humans and some alien life were in a constant war far in the future. They kept launching missiles at each other, but never did much damage. Then one guy shows up with an unheard-of ability: he can do math in his head, without needing a calculator. Basic addition and subtraction at first, but eventually square roots and stuff. The military co-opts his knowledge for a brilliant new strategy: teaching people how to do math so they can pilot newer, better missiles. The one guy commits suicide for contributing to the bloodshed, but it's far too late.

Rang in the new year by getting shitfaced on bourbon, then doing several thousand dollars worth of damage to the house my friend is so kind to let me live in. Thankfully, his homeowner's insurance covers it, and I just owe him the $500 deductible. But still....WTF 2013?? This is about the "gun to the baby new year's head" joke, isn't it?

I'm really hoping 2013 is just frontloading all the karmic retribution.

Got the final tally from the adjuster yesterday. Thirteen thousand dollars. I did thirteen-fucking-thousand dollars' worth of damage.

Life should really come with Steam achievements, like "Red Bull in a China Shop: Do $10,000 or greater in property damage while drunk."

Okay, so I have a Sad/Wtf, and this was closer to the top. . .

My brother is 1 ^1/2 year younger, and in many ways my inferior.  Geneticly he seemed to inherit all (most) of the malfunctions (Cysts, Dissimilar legs, The propensity to migranes, and several others).  He also has my father's aweful Italian looks (I have, surprise the better ones), and mother's poor disposition and antiscoialism (to be fair I have a few select issues, just as alcoholic as my dad).

Anywho, so several widely accepted truths aside, I was always a dick to him.  I was a bit of a bully as a kid, and a dick as an adolescent.  He has led a life more similar to some here than not, and I helped that.  From my earliest memories chasing him around the bedroom to beat him up to informing th store clerk when he stole soda to intorducing him to weed to calling him soft and weak (and a shitbag, or an incompetent lazy punk who holds others back (Game addict, jobless, emotionally unstable) to having sex with no less than half his female friends, I was always there to make his life miserable.  Its one of the big things I regret.

The other day he 'came out' on Facebook.  Which would be fine.  If it was accurate.  He renounced women (I know for a fact he had/has lesbian porn and several select female love interests) and declared it was our stepmother who made him so.  She would always make him clean and cook and mentaly (physically I think too) beat on him.  But he only renounced women because now he lives in a liberal house (he got kicked out of my mother's for insulting her husband and stealing the monies) with a would-be gay author who runs in very particular circles.

I know what some here would be thinking "But he is gay, how do you can you say he isn't?  You aren't him and don't have the right!"  But knowing  him my whole life and having a rubberbandish relationship since high school (It got better when he moved into my mother's) he has told me he was at least bisexual.  He has the mags and a healthy interest in women.  He almost married one last year, for christ'ssake!

I fear he is submitting to peer pressure and further isolating himself from my family and his older friends; and further that I am unable to help him.  Not because he's gay, he doesn't need help that way.  But because he's confused and been beaten around his whole life.  The girl he was supposed to marry turned lesbian after sleeping with him a month or so (It was one of those marriages).  I feel he is awash in all this turmoil and simply needs support (and real therapy)  He has several unresolved issues and has done rash things before in th past, even trying to slice his wrists with a paperclip (when my mother hid the knives).  I want him to live well, but I've damaged our relationship almost too far. . .

Protip: If you're going to pass out drunk in a warm bath, TURN OFF THE WATER FIRST.

Oh that's hardly the first time. It's pretty much a given that if I'm drunk enough to feel sick, I'm winding up in a tub at some point. Some people are happy drunks, some are angry drunks, I'm a tubby drunk. >_>
