I hate how we are expected to know things noone bothered to teach (or, indeed, directly refused to when asked, using various excuses)
Like what?
I understand the intent, but there are cases where asking to provide an example is problematic. I'll vouch for him and say for myself that educational systems sometimes slip up and demand you to know things you were not taught. Or reduce your grade for not knowing some format not taught to you. Or in a more personal social aspect being expected to know where my siblings are for my dad when they have no obligation to tell me.

I got punched in the throat really hard by a person I didn't know, at school.
For pretty much no reason.

You should have punched him right back. It would give him the message not to fuck with you.

You should have punched him right back. It would give him the message not to fuck with you to punch you back immediately in retaliation.

I'm not attempting to be one. If you punch somebody hard enough, they won't punch you again.

That saying is about as true as "They can't taunt you if they are dead." It's technically true but it still mind numbingly retarded. Not to mention that not everybody has that option of being strong enough to physically brutalize another person, nor the lack of character to do so.

Not to mention that not everyone wants to get convicted of serious assault, or that it could be the case that someone else takes revenge on behalf of the person you floored even if you are genuinely stronger than them.

If you punch them the moment after they punch you, it's classed as self defence AFAIK.

And Duke's and Leaf's points aside, Jacos got punched in the fucking throat. Dismissing him, regardless of where he got hit, with a "shoulda hit back" is the stuff of douches, man.

I wasn't attempting to dismiss him, I was just saying that he should have punched him back.

Anyway, I'm sad because Jacos got punched in the throat and that a certain part of me feels like it has been dipped in boiling water.

If you punch them the moment after they punch you, it's classed as self defence AFAIK.
Most jurisdictions have a mutual combat clause, meaning htat, if the cops can't determine who started the fight, then they just break it up and send everyone involved home. Even if blows are exchanged on both sides, however, if the attacked party can back up his claims of assault, then self-defense does not preclude charging your attacker with assault.

None of this, however, applies to a school setting. Virtually all US school districts have a zero-tolerance policy for fighting, in which the kid being held down and beaten by four guys is required to receive the same punishment as the ones doing the beating.
