Not to mention that not everyone wants to get convicted of serious assault
If you punch them the moment after they punch you, it's classed as self defence AFAIK.
None of this, however, applies to a school setting. Virtually all US school districts have a zero-tolerance policy for fighting, in which the kid being held down and beaten by four guys is required to receive the same punishment as the ones doing the beating.
Yeah, most Australian schools have the same rule.

It's pretty stupid, really.

It is indeed. I think it's quite prevalent in the UK as well, but someone who lives and goes to school there would have a better idea about that. (I'm something of an anti-ZT zealot, so I keep up on things as best I can.)

I have been in the somewhat unfortunate cicumstances of being in a fight twice, actually. I didn't fight back either time and the teachers did not punish me in any way. (this was in the UK)

I've never been punished for fighting (by my parents.) I got grounded for a month for not starting a fight once, but that's another matter.

I'm sad because there is not yet a thread for things that have made you afraid. I feel that of the four major emotions it is underrepresented here.
Ya there is, it's just not on the first page anymore.

I hate how we are expected to know things noone bothered to teach (or, indeed, directly refused to when asked, using various excuses)

Like what?
Like suturing.

Hum... I ran out of bandwidth for Photobucket. Well, now I've got imgur.
Also, while playing this game, it start lagging, so I saved and quit to save what I had done, then I left to go do something. I come back to find it frozen half-way through saving because my charger plug fell out, so now that save is corrupted. Uhg. :(

Ein is a woman.
I could have sworn Ein was a man...
Oh well. (I mean no offense to you, Ein.)

Really? Because every time I got into a fight at school, I knew that if I never threw a punch, I'd never get in trouble. It worked quite nicely; I got a couple of guys suspended and I only sustained minor bruises.

My school had an odd approach.  They would typically only do anything if the victim fought back, at which point they would punish both sides equally.  If the victim never fought back, they just ignored it.

Kid was spitting on me and stealing my shit on the bus, and the school couldn't be bothered with dealing with it.  Guess it's not really much of a story, my parents just raised me not to submit to bullying.
