It's actually the botanists that are prescriptivists in this matter

I'm pretty sure people were already aware of that. Prescriptivists hold out for some sort of "one correct meaning" whereas descriptivists say that a word means what each speaker intends it to mean. For non-botanists use, that descriptivism because its describing the real-life use of the word.

Things like "literally" actually fall into a different camp. It's actually inconsistent usage. For the same person who says "literally" to mean "not actually" / "virtually", ask the question "do you mean that literally?" to another statement and they'd almost certainly say "yes" if they meant "actually" and "no" if they meant "not actually". You could probably get them into a real headspin. Imagine if they said "look, on the corner, that's literally my car". "So that's actually your actual car?", "no, just 'literally' my car". "So you mean it's your car, and you mean that literally?" *head explodes*

So while we may know what they meant, they're still using the wrong word, since they don't have an internally consistent usage. "Could care less" is also wrong because it doesn't have internally consistent usage, and is just a misunderstanding of the logical intent of the original phrase.

Ah, but is there anything stopping us from using the word Literally hyperbolically? :D

"Could care less" can also technically be correct for the original usage (despite the wording being the opposite of the original) if it's treated as an incomplete sentence. "I could care less, but it would be difficult" or "I could care less, but not much" both communicate similar disinterest in the subject matter. It's indicating that yes, it's theoretically (here we go again) possible for me to care less about that, but in practical terms the difference is inconsequential.

Obviously, none of those statements apply to the matter of prescriptivism.

I had an experience somewhat relevant to this ongoing topic of the last 3 pages, where I encountered a person sadly misusing ambiguous language by asking me to go clubbing. I immediately started clubbing everything within reach with a nearby stapler, and this simpleton just started screaming over and over again saying "no, I want to go clubbing", which only made me club more. Ultimately the confusion proved to be literally impossible to resolve, and the impasse only ended when I ran out of allocated memory and segfaulted from all the unresolved clubbing requests accumulating on my main stack. Thankfully I was rebooted by another passing soulless, robotic being willfully incapable of understanding human language, or else I might still be rusting at that mixer for senior project chatbots.

Was Tay there? I haven't heard of her since she was reprogrammed by Reddit.

Yo so I'm playing Total Warhammer 2 as Chaos.

I decided to be good guy Chaos. This means I don't fight anyone who isn't a bad guy. No attacking the empire, it's all Orcs, Norsca, Dark Elves, etc. I will purge the world of evil, one twisted parody of life at a time. For the Dark Gods. Mind you the human factions hate me and are at locked perma-war with me, but I'm sure they'll come around.

I carved my way through Norsca, then went straight for the dark elves. Thing is, the regular good guy high elves are so happy about this that they are signing treaties with me. Soon Archaon, Lord of the End Times, will be having tea parties with the elves just like he always wanted.
