Dunno? The trailer shows some signs of fairly clear reference to the games. That might not mean they actually played one, or that anyone calling the shots paid any attention to the people that did (or that said people spoke up to begin with), or that they played anything except, like. One of the terrible ones. Or whatever sundry list you could keep making.

Honestly, it's fairly staggeringly unlikely that nobody making the thing played. Hitman is relatively niche in comparison. Sonic games have been being made since I was a kid and fairly well known/experienced throughout the intervening years. You'd have to actively work to avoid hiring anybody that had exposure. Hell, there's probably folks involved familiar with the supporting materials -- comics, TV series, etc. That just doesn't mean they had much input, or cared enough to mitigate... that... even if they did.

Count me as another one that liked the old SMB movie. People forget how little detail NES games had, even counting the manual; if you wanted to be "faithful" you might as well record a longplay and release it in theaters.

As a side note, I would gladly take smarmy jackass Link from the cartoons as an alternative to "completely unchanged since 2002" Toon Link and "emotionless Figma statue" Adult/Normal Link. I would give anything to see Cartoon Link or CDI Link as Amiibo DLC for Breath of the Wild... complete with voices.

Actually watched through that again fairly recently. It's...just not faithful at all to the games. Stuff like the Goombas, which are wrong on more than a 'doesn't look like the game' level. Sure, they didn't have much to go on, but I get a strong impression that it was a script for something else entirely that they just slapped a few SMB stuff onto without much regard for logic and called it a day.

It's still a fun bad movie, mind you. But when they can't even get the colors of the main characters right for most of the movie...

I was on the youngish side when I saw that movie, and I had even less taste then I do now. I still couldn't say back then that anyone who made the movie was even making an effort to LOOK like they're trying.

I liked the remake much more, although some people might complain it was a little too dark.

I think i was like 10-12 when i saw the mario movie and it gave me nightmares.
