Up till recently I'd have unironically posted this in "mildly sad" at best, but... not this year.  I hate birthdays because I'm afraid of stagnation, but this year was anything but.
Particularly these past few days, frick.  I could tell you a story all about how my life got flipped turned upside down, but I need to get ready for DND night.  I think we're either going to Ravenloft or the icy tundra above Neverwinter.

If you're looking for that general kind of hobby, chainmail is very cheap to get started with. The only actual tools you need for butted mail are needlenose pliers.

And the cost of the metal is...?

Overwhelmingly contingent upon what metal you want. If you want to go super cheap, you can buy a reel of 100 ft of galvanized iron wire and a stick to wind it around for about $10, and that will make ~1500 1/4" ID rings, which is enough to make about half a square foot of euro 4-in-1 or a bunch of bracelets or necklaces or things like that. (Obligatory warning about zinc here, though.)

If you want something that looks nicer, pre-cut rings aren't necessarily that much more expensive unless you want to work with precious metals or make something like a hauberk -- and even then, it will take long enough that it might be worth looking at it in terms of cost per hour from a hobby standpoint.
