Do you want to drain planets resources via overconsumption? Because that's how you do it. With an artificially created over-the-top level of demand advertisement industry is creating.

*in hippy voice* Think of the planet, maaaaan.

My bad, haven't thought of that. If that's what works for you, then sure, this might be helpful a little bit. Although it's a needle in a haystack type of deal with ads, I'd presume.

It's not like we have anything big enough to compare to a large capitalist state. Anymore  >:(
Heavy government control should theoretically help to impose restraints on pollution-emitting facilities. And rarely do capitalism and free enterprise do well together with heavy government control.

That's assuming the heavy government in control actually cares enough to impose effective restrictions on pollution beyond "whatever gets the voters to shut up and think were doing a good job and keep voting for us"

Because politicians often take a similar mindset to capitalist business men; whatever gets them the money and power they want without getting them in hot water for it is cool. So they also have to be kept on a tight leash, by voters. And most of us are lazy and just take whatever promises they make for granted.

I think that by "heavy government in control" Comrade P. meant a government with an effective enough lockdown of the electoral process that it can easily afford unpopular measures, i.e. the Chinese/Russian political system. And China certainly is taking some heavy measures to fight pollution, now that they've achieved a high-enough tech level to start solving it without downgrading their material advantage.

Yes, what Sergarr said. Thanks, Sergarr.
I couldn't take a verbal route to reply in a manner that would be... well, coherent. I guess I'm tired right now, is all.

Yeah 'merica's currently emulating heavy handed government in support of the rape of the land, but I assume most of you knew that already. Good times await.

Not even trying to advocate for that. Lots of mistakes were made, big ones. Best we can do is learn to plan more carefully and further ahead, I guess.

I dunno, it seems that Uzbekistan still profits quite a bit by maintaining its cotton industry. Not enough information to conclude whenever it's positive or negative for the region.

Our national children's hero biologist / Dutch variant of Steve Irwin, Freek Vonk (better known over here as 'the tv biologist with ADHD') got bitten in the arm by a Caribean reef shark while filming for his series' new season at Bimini islands.

A trauma helicopter had to fly him to a hospital in Miami, where he was treated. He was lucky. While it looks very nasty, the shark missed the vital parts (of his arm), and his nerves are still working. Which is why it goes to the Happy thread, glad he will live to continue making biology popular with kids.

Warning graphic shark bite photo. Deep bite marks inside

Crikey!

Although to be completely honest I get the feeling most of Australian society totally wrote off Erwin as a yokel with a tacky TV show, until after he died, then suddenly he was a media darling.

Flooded cultural and archaeological sites, evicted 1.3 million people from their homes, not as nice :(
