An offer of eight hundred million credits was issued for exclusive beskar mining rights in the verdant Tokursh region of Mandalore, and the MandalMotors company was solicited to refurbish old prison ships and construct new ones with Mandalorian iron enhancements. In addition, requests were made to acquire specialist beskar equipment including manacles, holding cages, and security doors.[4] However, as time passed, relations between the Empire and Mandalore changed from cordial to hostile: Mandalore was taken over by the Imperials and its people enslaved.[22] The Empire strip-mined Mandalore's shallow veins of beskar ore, shipping a significant amount offworld[1] before Fenn Shysa and the Mandalorian Protectors were able to liberate Mandalore from the Empire.[22] Around this same time, the Sith Lady Lumiya used Mandalorian iron to construct portions of her lightwhip.[23]

Rediscovery, during the aftermath of the Yuuzhan Vong War:

After the end of the galactic invasion by the Yuuzhan Vong and their devastating attack on Mandalore, a new source of Mandalorian iron was discovered in 40 ABY. Heeding the orders of reigning Mand'alor Boba Fett, two Mandalorians—one a geologist, and the other a minerals engineer—were returning to Mandalore when they decided to take an orbital scan of the surface damage that had been incurred by the Yuuzhan Vong.

In other words, I have no idea what the lightsaber is actually made of. It's got to be Mandalorian Iron. Phrik, and Cortosis/similar materials are literally unobtainable. It's a silly retcon, as the new Star wars isn't even going to be in the same universe as the Yuuzhan Vong conflict because reasons. Probably going to be a spiel about 'finding plenty enough of it to make into lightsabers'. But either way, you can cut through it. You need to alloy Mandalore Iron with something else to make it impervious to lightsabers. /seriouslynerd

Or it'll even be a brand new material George Lucas makes up on the spot, he likes doing that.

George Lucas isn't supposed to have any sort of involvement with these new movies. It's possible they might consult him on stuff or something, but he has no official say on what happens with Star Wars anymore.

I believe the entire thing was written and setup months before the rights were acquired by Disney. That's true, though, it could be after the fact Disney/Abrams meddling. Not that he isn't known to bastardize other notable works cultural icons of scifi.

I'm tempted to watch the Star Wars trailer, but having experienced in the past tons of horrible trailers that were in fact movie synopsis and/or unnecessary hype-train material, I now just refuse to watch any sort of trailers if possible. As for that... lightsaber hilt... is this actually a thing? I mean, from official trailer? Actual, official thing? I... I just can't explain how mind-bogglingly absurd that thing seems to me. I makes absolutely no sense. At all.

You know, for all the slacking, this week has been a little on the crazy side. I haven't done nearly enough creation, but I've absorbed a stupid amount of knowledge that I'll never be able to retain. Something like 15 hours of lectures on AI in the past few days, plus a few here and there on databases, and then there's the studying for the actual classes I'm in, and Herodotus' wacky ideas about what constitutes history. My brain feels like it's melting and it's great.
