Science Fiction tidbit! I studied it a bit in University, and I learnt one important thing.
The best way to make a Professor who has focused on Science Fiction cringe, is to call it Sci-fi. To them there's a huge distinction between Science Fiction (Asimov, Clark et. al.) and Sci-Fi (Star Wars etc.).
Ah, but I used SF. What does that mean? :P (apart from the fact that I'm lazy)
SF is actually the accepted shortening of Science Fiction if I remember correctly.

Holy shit, I just realized that I haven't read volume 1 of The Complete Stories of Asimov yet, despite it being on my shelf for a while (I was reading other things).
Yissssss

E: This book was printed in 1997. I bought it three months ago. This probably belongs in the sad thread. (Alongside the fact that the text on the first few pages is very lopsided)

That would be because they're pretentious assholes, no offense to your particular set of professors.  Its just how to English teachers magical realism is literary but all fantasy is crap, never mind the obvious logical flaw of that statement.

My father found me two books the other day. One of them was titled "How to Shit in the Woods" and the other was an enormous book of facts supposedly written by Isaac Asimov.

Watching http://new.livestream.com/ESA/cometlanding

ESA guy said that ESA best space agency in the world with best people working for them.

You gonna take that NASA? Let them run around claiming that they are the best? But then again I guess they are, after all you have to ask Russia to borrow a Soyuz whenever you want a space mission. Vain attempt to start a space race.

Agreed.  To me, it feels like a way of subcompartmentalizing the ghettos to avoid having to actually question one's preconceptions about genre fiction.  I don't even like it when Harlan Ellison does it, and he writes the stuff.

That said, I will unabashedly refer to stuff like Star Wars as space opera in order to distinguish it from harder works, so I really can't talk too much on that. :P

This is probably why you weren't in charge of landing on the comet. :)

Star Wars is, last time I checked, far from being Science Fiction.
It's a space opera.

And Warhammer 40k is dark ages fantasy with sci-fi aesthetics.

I'm studying for my computers theory exam. Everyone else seems to be terribly nervous about it, and I'm just feeling arrogant and superior because good grief these people have no idea how bad these papers can be. I'm accustomed to needing to know every single acronym ever used in the year, every piece of hardware ever plus a few, things like that. This is apparently not how it works here.

Heck, in the past papers any time an acronym is used in a question the full term is written out as well. Welp, time for irrational wory because this looks too easy.
