Let's just say that if you replaced most of Detroit with a black hole, things would get better and the GDP/c would go up.

I would argue that this is true for most all of the planet, but that's just me.

Y'know, I've heard that if a moderate-yield nuclear weapon were detonated in Trafalgar Square, London would lose something like 15% of its population and 10% of its infrastructure and other property, so that on average the survivors would be better off after a nuclear attack than before. I haven't got one single citation to back that up, however. Seems relevant.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

There's the whole radiation thing...
The radiation can't bother anyone if everybody is dead.
Problem solved.
It's amazing how many things would be solved if you just take living creatures out of the equation.

I still fail to see how blowing up part of a population makes life for the rest of it better. I mean, what if you blow up a science convention or hospital?

That's why you don't limit it to just part of the population.
You get everyone.

Blowing up the populations of America, India and China - the rest of the world starts a massive party in celebration. Unless it's the kind of blowing up in which the populations only expand in which case the Earth begins consuming itself in an excess of gluttony and morbid hedonism.
