I guess we should move the Final Fantasy topic elsewhere then, as to not bog this down? But my last word on that topic, at least here:

FFXII, despite plenty of reviews I heard, was actually quite nice. Probably one of the most immersive of the FF games. As you hunt, you learn more of the game's lore, and creatures and gods' backstories and trivia. Basically, you felt like you were a citizen of that world too, tagging along with the main adventurers. Hell, I loved the atmosphere. I wanted to hang out with Namingway and the rest of the Hunter's Guild after a nice big game. Hell, the music even rocked. And as I took down some side-quests, I felt like I was actually helping the world out, since my past side-quest takedowns get mentioned over time, or show a long-term effect, and affect, on some people and places (especially with an ultima weapon raiding the skies (just like in FF7, but now with more air traffic); after you take it down, you get free travel, and every airship loves your team, and are asking you what it was like and such. You gain fans. Oh yeah, and the fight against that same creature is timed, and if you don't take it down in time, you have to fly ship after ship, until you run into it again by random chance. It doesn't always attack the same ship twice.).

Hell, you wonder where all those potions and crap you buy come from? Well, guess how you earn your keep in that game? You get raw materials for vendors to go all sciency and such with, and get paid for your troubles getting these items for potency for them. And the bazaar system added to that by rewarding you with potential end-products of your harvesting and farming. And remember that lore collection? Remember one or two items mentioned in it? Now what can you get from the bazaar? The Tournesol Sword? BADASS!! You just crafted your own megaweapon over time. I never felt like I deserved such an awesome weapon, until I finally got it from the bazaar, and it was every bit worth it, in damage, looks, and rewardingly.

He's said in the past that he's cool with cheating/hacks/exploits because the only problems with that would come up are in multiplayer games, i.e., not at all.

Does anyone want to talk about pie? I have resolved this summer to learn baking, for when I have to return to the dorms but will no longer have a meal plan. Baking will earn the favor of my next-years dormmates, and allow me to mooch off them.

Hugo, you fool. Allow me to explain to you why you shouldn't bake.

Cooking. Cooking is not an exact science. You put warm stuff with other warm stuff. It is simple. It is art. It is perfect.

Baking, now baking is an exact science. One milligram of yeast too much, and that thing is going to explode and kill your parents. And your future children. And anyone you've ever even slightly liked. It is complex. You strive, and you try, and then, after all that? You've got some shitty pie or cake or whatever.

Don't. Bake.

Sometimes. I've eaten tasty cakes made without baking powder, and my sister basically never uses a recipe to bake, and usually produces delicious results. Ad libbing is entirely possible once you've got a little practice, much like cooking. Admittedly, 'a little' differs a lot between the two, but it's still possible.

Fun times indeed. I dunno how often I painted and shaved that one Moogle.

I never actually played more than a little of it. A friend of mine had the game on his Gamecube, and I and another friend or two went over there a few times, spent ages setting everyone up with a Gameboy and the convoluted connector cords, then made characters and played for a while until we had to go home.
It seemed really, really cool, though. I wish we'd gotten further into it.

Current happy: just ate at the Sushi Tram restaurant down the road. Was actually pretty nice, and I inadvertently went there on cheap night!

Y'know, I've grazed over several pages in that thread and I still have no idea what it's supposed to be doing.

Fake-edit: Oh, wait. Multiple z-levels. I actually see what they're talking about now. Tilesets are arcane gibberish to me, so it took me more than a minute to figure out what was going on in the screenshots. Still not sure what the text separation bits are supposed to... do, really. But people seem excited, so... cooee.

From what I recall the text is based on the same tileset that the graphics are represented from, so if you've replaced the graphic for a well with a picture of a well, all instances of 'o' in things like messages and status updates will also be replaced. This allows you to view text as text, as the name indicates.
